guys-
I'm still on my factory HT's and am currently about 88,000kms, the rear are due for new ones and the front has about 20% left in them..
I run 40 PSI at all times on the road- better braking and tyre wear.
If the PSI is too low- the rubber scrubs off the tyre as its more flexible.

I'm going in for the Bridgestone D697's next.

Brodie,
I like to keep things within legalities at times, so not to exceed things-
265/65R17 at this stage, and an LT construction, I'm not an extreme rock hopper so AT will suit me fine.
BUT....
Looking at pics and so on, tempting to get some nice wrangler muddies or the like!!

Why do you run nitrogen?
What is the benefit?

Its good for racing, as the pressure change is less between hot and cold tyre than what it is with O2. Not too sure about the gains with a 4x4. Each to their own I guess.

I think I'm at 40ish at the moment, usually 38 but on Sunday I just filled them until they looked about right

I run 40 hot all round. If its been raining for a few days I drop the back ones down to 38 or 36.

The air is already made up of 78 percent nitrogen so the benefits are less than what they advertise. And if you are wheeling unless you have kind of wizz bang separater than it becomes unreasonable to reinflate with only nitrogen.

I got Yokohama geolander at/s 265/70 r16s fitted just after I got my triton. Guy in the tyre shop had them on his hilux, he said run them at 44 on the black stuff and about 12-15 in the sand. Total newbie myself so he pointed out that i shouldnt drive like a p***k with pressure that low! he said he was getting good tyre wear rotating through 5 tyres.

i have goodyear duratrac 265-75-16's and have just ticked over 71,000kms, i reckon they have about 4-5thou left in them. always ran between 34-36psi and 95% bitumen km's.

Regularly rotated at 7500km intervals.

Not a cheap tyre, but with km's like that, and absolutely silent tyres for mudders, im happy as a pig in shit with them!

I swapped out the OEM HT's for Maxxis 980's 265/75/16's and the tyre retailer suggested 38 front and 32 rear.

The fronts seem a bit hard and I get the feeling that the rears seem a bit spongy, so I am going to try about 35 all round and see how they feel. I'll also go for a run and do the checks suggested in a previous post.

The usual scenario is around 36 rears and 32 front, think your retailer has mixed them up...

In my experience the fronts don't 'feel' any softer until around 32 psi...

The Triton rides and handles great at 30 psi all round, but the fuel economy sucks...... :(

275/55/20 cooper at3's with 44 in fronts, 40 in rears. Figured more tyre contact on the road needed for rears since the front is already nicely weighted by the engine.

That is a lot of pressure

My work Triton has Cooper AT3's and carries a heap of weight and I run 42 in the rear where the weight is and 38 in the front. Over one Tonne with 400Litres of diesel in the tank, the tyres still look like they are pumped up...

Was always told to put more in the rear where the weight is :?

My ML Triton has 36 psi all round for a bit of comfort, until loaded for camping, then I up the rears to around 40 or whatever looks right.....

In my experience, this is on the right track. I used to run mainly empty so high pressures in the rear weren't needed.

38psi for the front does sound a little high, though. I'd suggest dropping to 36psi and see how you go.

Is 44 too high? was originally told to run them at 48 :o
The weight is in the front, absolutely nothing in the tub while being a street vehicle. Unless engine and steel bull bar is lighter than an empty tub?
Play wheels with 265/75/16 Federal M/T's run at 35 all around though.

I think somewhere around 36 psi is the margin between comfort and fuel economy, lots run 40 psi all round as this is what most tyre fitters put in.

48 seems a bit high, it won't hurt to experiment with your pressures either.....

Don't forget if you check them when starting a drive they will increase pressure as the tyre heats up during the drive. this can be a good reference point.
Check pressure cold before driving and then again after driving, within one minute of stopping. Then you can see the difference cold pressures make.
Here in VIC during winter the tyres don't change much from cold to hot, but in summer they heat up heaps and can gain 4-6 psi from cold to hot....

That's been my observation anyway, hence my ML is usually around the 36 psi, seems to be a happy median between comfort and economy....
For me anyway 8-)

I run 31" MUDs and run 40 all around. Reasonable comfort and good economy! Plus I find the car drives better at that pressure!

I swapped to my Goodyear Wranglers last week and noticed yesterday one looked a little down so I checked them.... Yep 20 psi in one and 30 in the rest

No wonder it was a comfy ride and ute felt like it was wallowing around the road  Will pump them up one day when I can be bothered.....

Checked the pressures before I took off to Melbourne last week and the fronts were 44psi and the rears were 32psi. The tyre dealers gauge is either out, or the fitter was off with the fairies. Dropped the fronts to 36psi and upped the rears to 34psi and the front felt spot on but the rears still felt a bit low so will try 36psi all round.

The 2800k round trip to Melbourne gave me 8.5l/100km, but 95% of the trip was on cruise @110km/hr. Dunno whether or not that is low for a new motor on the highway.

I'm on my 2nd set of bighorns and have always run 36 front and rear. Get even wear with regular rotation :)
