MN Triton steering shudder

MN Triton steering shudder

Postby Glixer on Tue Sep 09, 2014 5:58 pm

Hello all, new to the site, I've read just about everything I can on this topic, but nothing quite seems to be the same as my issue.
I bought this ute second hand with shot Bridgestones (original tyres) 12 months ago, a 2009 with 47ks, very clean underused ute.
Threw 265/65 17 Cooper AT3's at it the day I bought it, and since then, whenever I hit the slightest uneven surface on bitumen, the steering wheel shudders.
Tyre people said it was suspension, took it to suspension folks, they told me it was tyres.
Bit the bullet, fitted Kings and Bilsteins all round, same damn shudder.
No one seems to know, tried tyre pressures, had the front end fully checked out, thrown alignments at it etc etc
Help, the damn thing is fine except this vibration, too scared to take it where my MK would go, a lot of farm road work, so it hasn't even left the bitumen yet.
I need some wise heads advice here please.
Thanks.

I have a mn with 2inch lift and I wanna put spacers and extendable shackles to get a bit of extra height. Was told by a few suspension mobs that upper ball joints and cvs can b upset and they will get shudders on road. What's your lift. Mayb the shudder has something to do with that.

Sounds like wheel balance?

Hi guys,
Didn't lift it, just had the height reset to standard after fitting the ARB steel bar, it sagged 12-15mm at the front after fitting, so the Kings just lifted the front to standard height.
The weird thing is, it tracks absolutely true on smooth bitumen all the way through to 125kmh, but the slightest unevenness makes the steering wheel shudder.
Appreciate the interest.

What he is describing sounds different to driveline shudder. The shudder usually hits on low speed take off whereas this seems to be front end steering feedback?

Could be the column. Does it rattle as well?

No, not really, but as the steering wheel movement has all my attention, I'll pay a bit more attention as to whether or not there is a rattle as well.

Cowboy Dave is on the right track, it's definitely feedback through the wheel, rather than driveline vibration, I've had some hot cars in the past and know drivetrain vibration, this is different.

I've read so much about the steering column, was it an actual recall/warranty issue as there is nothing on the ACCC recall website.https://www.recalls.gov.au/content/inde ... mId/952859

Thanks again

The steering column thing was a hotline fix. It was more a rattle or noise like a clunk. Not a full recall as I recall it.

Have you had it on one of those computerised suspension test rigs?

Was there any indication about the way the old tyres were worn that would give any clues?

Have the wheel bearings been checked?

Cheers Cowboy Dave.

Thanks for the info on the column.

Fulcrum did the rig test when they did the suspension, checked everything, bushes etc.

The old tyres were just worn evenly, but to be honest, they were going on the first day as part of the deal on the car, so I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to them.

Wheel bearings haven't been checked since I've owned it specifically, but it has just had the 60k service at the dealers, so I can only imagine that it they was money to be spent, they would have found it!

I'll jack it up on the weekend and check for float, thank for the tip.

I have the same problem in my 2010 mn glx dual cab, it is the same as you describe with the steering shudder and feedback. Has been like it since I bought it used has 83k km and is fitted with ironman suspension all-around I thought this may have been the cause. Please update of you find any answers and I will do the same.

Are you able to try a different set of tyres and rims? A damaged rim (not talking external) would cause problems.

i have this.
last 2 days at the shop- front suspensions changed- new ( :D )- the shudder on rough patches is now much less, the bumps aren't there as much, but the shudder is still there. so i don't know. mechanics deny its bearings. so i wonder if its steering (rack and pinion etc)... don't know. Mecahnics reckon its normal for a triton but.... so i don't know.
