Triton steering play?

Triton steering play?

Postby Kawasakirider on Wed Oct 22, 2014 4:51 pm

Hey everyone, I have a 2008 3.5L triton and the steering wheel has some play in it from side to side, almost as if a rack bush has gone but I don't think that's the issue.

Apparently these cars have a common steering clunk. Can anyone shed some light on the cause and the best way to go about fixing it?

I have tried searching, it's just difficult on a phone.

Thanks in advance, I appreciate it!

This is the thread for all the people who had the problem:

http://www.newtriton.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=2931#p42656

and this is the thread with the DIY fix in it:

But that's not steering play as such, rather these threads are more about a clunk noise they make.

Hey Fellas, thanks for that, but that's not my issue.

My issue feels like slop in the steering rack.

If I move the wheel left and right, there's about 15mm of play and it goes all the way down the column, through the wheel and all the way to the steering rack.

Suggestions?

you need to give us more info. how many kilometres are we talking about on the odo? there are so many joined parts in steering they all have to only have a little bit of play from wear and it will add up to seemingly significant.

the ML's suffer from (in my opinion) a poor power steering operation at low RPM and fast turn (like an emergency lane change) but that does not sound like your issue.
This car is like a bad drug habit. It is taking all my money and time, my family are concerned, but new mods just feel sooooooo good.

Mate, if I was in your shoes I would be heading to my nearest garage or front-end specialist and having a competent mechanic run an eye over it.

The thought of a two-ton truck running around with dodgy steering is a bit scary.

Well yeah but 15mm doesn't exactly sound like a death trap if measured at steering wheel rotation
