Iron man suspension with a knock in the rear

Iron man suspension with a knock in the rear

Postby cjsxrt on Wed Apr 27, 2016 4:42 pm

Hi guys I've gone thru all other knocking threads and my knocks getting to the point it's pissing me off. I've gone thru the hole arse end today double and tripled checked all nuts and bolts were tight I've got some questions. It's a ML 08 auto v6.
1) Has anyone had any issues with rear diffs?
2) Does anyone have a issue with the top of the shock on the passenger side sitting hard up against the chassis? (Mine shock shroud is sitting hard up against the chassis)
3) would this cause a knock that's pissing me off? Cheers guys

Busted or bent top mount or rubbers on shock or busted or bent top shock absorber mount.

Either would probably cause some noise.

Had any hard landings lately?
Chris

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

Nah haven't had any hard landings most of the time we go off road it's beach work. Well the rubbers don't look to bad there's some cracks in the rubbers. It's feels like and sounds like it comes from the left rear

easy way to check if it's the shock, undo 2 nuts and take it of and go for a spin ! if any thing it looks like that top nut has been over tightened, I would replace that rubber and then use a couple of washers "if needed" to make gap between shock and chassis

X2

I'd try packing it out to give the shock body a couple of km clearance.

Just a thought - the Axle is actually central under the chassis? If it were offset a little it could cause an oversize shocker to be tilted towards the rail.

Cheers guys I'll get some replacement bushes and replace them and space out the shock and see it that does it. Rhk triton I'm pretty sure it's central it all looks central I'm going with the person who installed it cranked it up to much and I never looked to make sure it looked right

Is it the correct aftermarket shock?
maybe the ring end should have been slightly offset  :?:

I think it's just been well over tightened and that's why it rubbing as it's crushed the rubber bush and pushed it across

new bush and just nip it up = happy days

Haven't got something metal sitting loose behind the back seat?

So to recap; is the knocking mainly on bumps, accelerating/decelerating, going around bends/corners?

I had some shackles hanging on the tie down loops in the tub - made a huge racket.

It happens over bumps mainly unless it's been raining then it'll happen around the round about when you thru it. Nothing in the tub I can feel it thru the seat and it sounds like it's in the rear I thought it might of been the spare but that's tight so it's really got me stuffed

same thing happened to mine mate . i ended up taking it to pedders for the 29$ tech check and inspect . They diagnosed it straight away as excess movement in the leafs . He said you generally get it all the time on the front of the old leaf sprung cruisers etc . Took a little convincing to the ironman dealer but the springs were only 14 months old . The replaced them under warranty and i haven't a knock since ;) .

So, I was convinced that my knocking was attributed to the rear quarter panel issue in the MQ, but after reading this and taking it to pedders, they found the issue is in the rear leafs! He thought it was something to do with the slip pads needing lubrication, which was causing the leafs to jolt as the spread, instead of slide.

So I dropped each rear off a drop and let the tyre hand a little, then jammed them full of inox. Not only do they still knock, they seem to be the worst they've been!

I have to take them back, but I am heading off on a 4 days trip towing the van around and won't get a chance! They are starting to worry me, but if it is this 'excess movement in the leafs', are they safe to drive around on?

Yeah I'm taking mine back to the fitter on Tuesday and see what he thinks. I'll be pushing for a replacement that's for sure!

Im dropping it off tomorrow for a better look over. I took it there for a quick assess and they think it may be that things just need tightening up, or maybe the slip pads between the leafs need a good grease (fiction possibly causing the knock as they slip /twist).

I told them that the extra grease I have added previously only made it worse (as everything moved more) but I'll give them the benifit of the doubt and they can check it out. They are going to throw it up on the hydraulic stands to allow the leafs to drop and clean, tighten, regrease everything so it may be all it needs. Otherwise they said they will launch a claim with ironman to replace them!

See how it goes. Once I find out il drop a line back here!

Cheers, Clint

Yeah safe to drive around on just more of an annoyance . After i got home from the first time i took it to ironman i'd found they jammed a shit heap of grease in between the leafs . It kind of got rid of the noise but i wasn't going to be doing that all the time . I got the karcher out and gave it a pressure wash with degreaser and boom knock was back . If they can't rectify just push for replacement springs . I had a letter from pedders to help my case along .

Cheers
