Heavy Steering, MN Triton

Heavy Steering, MN Triton

Postby wildturkeycanoe on Wed Dec 28, 2016 7:45 pm

Since purchasing my Triton a year ago I have noticed the steering is getting heavier [or my arms are getting weaker]. After driving a mate's Hilux I immediately noticed how much easier his was to turn and his tyres are even wider than mine.
Are Tritons known for heavier steering or could there be a reason for this?
I can't find any info on adjusting them, say , cranking up a relief valve spring or something. So apart from doing a fluid change to fresh PS fluid, anyone have an idea how to make it easier to turn? [Please don't say get skinnier tyres or a bigger steering wheel] I hope it isn't a worn power steering rack, that'd be quite costly to fix I'd reckon.
Perhaps next year if I get wealthy enough I will take it to a steering place to get overhauled, but it'd be nice to know if that is just the way it is and can't be made any easier, before spending money on a problem that doesn't exist..

Fluid leak as above, and check tyre pressure. Stock tyres I run 34psi.

Check power steering belt isn't loose/missing (is it a separate belt?)

Definitely no leak, fluid is there in abundance in the reservoir. The belt isn't broken or slipping either. It is working, but just not very well. My tyre pressures are around 35 PSI.

How many km on the clock? Might be a tired pump/rack.

I wouldn't say that my MN is overly heavy. Our other car is a fiesta with electric assist steering, my push-bike takes more effort than that thing. :)

The one thing I notice as soon as I get back in a MN triton is how heavy the steering is in comparison to just about anything else from utes to landcruiser's.
