Limited Budget Options.

Postby ozguy7 on Thu Aug 09, 2018 8:44 am

Hi All,

I'm looking for some opinions on how best to upgrade the stock suspension on my 2012 MN GLR. I have a TJM Steel bar fitted, standard size tyres and occasionally tow a 1.2T trailer but that's all.

The current suspension is borderline dangerous. The car is all over the road if there are any bumps whatsoever. Corrugated dirt roads are the worst. I have to slow way way down to have any level of comfort and security. I run around 34 PSI front and back.

I understand a full suspension upgrade would make a massive difference but I simply can't afford the 2K price tag. I'm really looking for the most cost effective changes I can make to improve the suspension.

I drive a 2012 GLX, I changed the shocks first, made a huge difference to the handling.

I then had the rear springs re-set about 2 years later and then earlier the front springs had sagged enough so that the bump stops were doing their job, so they were replaced.

I think if you do the shocks first, you'll see a major improvment

Yes, shocks first but don't cheap out on these.

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

Would it be best to replace the front shocks first? Or does it not really matter?

If I had to choose between front or back shocks, I would go for the front first

I've got a suspicion that the front is sitting lower than stock with the weight of the bullbar. Could the springs also need doing? Car only has 40k on the clock so I wouldn't have thought so.

When i fitted my steel bar it wasnt to long after the front springs sagged big time.
If your paying for front shocks to be removed and refitted personally i would do springs as well.
Mine has 25k so it didnt last long.
Fitted ironman and for the price im happy. Would be great to try other brands.

Ultimate full front and rear under 2k, install at home in a few hours or more with beers. Best money I spent on the thing.

Always a challenge whilst on a budget buddy, this is how I would approach it;
Good quality shocks in the front, you have a steal bull bar to support.
Good quality shocks in the rear when budget allows.

Then upgrade your springs front then rear, after that your done.

OEM suspension on the Tri's literally suck, I knew that when I purchased my MN new, l replaced the suspension with a Dobinson kit when new, but I was fortunate enough to be in a position to do so, good luck with it all.

Thanks guys. Sounds like front shocks first, followed by rear. Springs might have to wait until the budget improves.

Would something like this make much of a difference and be suitable?

The coils and assembly is worth $300. If you can install yourself it would be better that worn out stock suspension.
