Dms strut failure.

Dms strut failure.

Postby chevute on Fri Apr 05, 2019 8:35 pm

Well unfortunately this afternoon I noticed some oil on my front right tire upon inspection my strut has failed and lost its oil, has anyone else had a strut fail with bugger all klms? These have less than 10000klms on them and aren't even 12 months old and haven't had much rough road driving either , I'm pretty disappointed as the dms shocks seemed to work very well till now.
Hopefully they will warrant the failed one.

Good luck with warranty

I was going to go with the ultimate suspension and probably should have, anyway we will see how well dms warrant their products.

Mate any shock can fail, have you contacted your place of purchase, may be a straight swap. Sometimes things don’t go to plan. I’ve seen new fox fail, new ome fail. It can happen. Let us know how you get on.

Yep very true.
I've got two leaking Ultimate shocks on my MN at the moment... leaking bad enough to fail rego inspection last month... Least of my worries with this bucket atm.

Yep, noticed my Ultimate Suspension struts leaking at Christmas after only 10,000 kms and pretty light duty. Should have told them then, waited until now when one has now failed completely and realized I am now just out of the warranty period - D'Oh!

I guess the Chinese made quality isn't the best. I replaced my Ultimate fronts after they hemorrhaged at 40K km's. Bad North Queensland roads blamed (hardly been on a dirt road in that time, I'm sure it wasn't a warranty condition though  ). Warranty denial so no more interest in that particular product. There are far better options out there.

That's a bit surprising with Ultimate, usually they're very good with warranty support.

My first round of front struts were a bit shagged after my first trip around Aus. However, that was after 35k kms of extremely hard use... The steel top hats were chewed out, bushes were all gone, nothing leaking but the oil that came out was black. I paid to have them rebuilt, can't remember what it cost but was quite cheap. Same thing happened on the next trip but not as bad. Also had rear shocks rebuilt first time around but didn't bother second time... probably reason why they're leaking now.

Since then I haven't touched the fronts, and they've done nearly 100k km, I'll probably replace them at the end of the year as they're not feeling too great now.

There's definitely better gear out there but I'll probably stick with Ultimate for the Triton. Especially now that it only gets used as a work hack and the occasional play around my local tracks. Always had good customer service with Ultimate but I'm a little reluctant now that Brendan isn't there.

If I was doing it all again, setting the Triton up for outback touring, I'd go for a more high end product / race tunable shocks like Icon, King, Fox or DMS... Not sure what would work best on the Triton as you really need a specialist to set these up properly.

The Ultimates I have on the Triton are seriously lacking when it comes to carrying heavy loads across the outback desert tracks, just not enough high speed dampening or rebound control, they just don't cut it like a proper race tuned shock.

On our Landcruiser, I recently installed set of Icon stage 4 shocks with built in hydraulic bumpstop cdc fully adjustable dampening... the performance is something out of this world!!
It cost me nearly double what Ultimate had quoted me but I'm certainly getting more than double the performance.

It is what it is. I called them out on the warranty issue but I really did not have the time to pursue it. I have to say that the Lovells front springs and the rear leaf springs have been superb. The rear springs are probably of Asian origin but they are hard to fault and have stood up well. The spring rates were spot on.

Like you, I found the stock shocks were terribly underdamped in rebound and that's on normal roads. The lower bushes on the first set of front shocks were rubbish but the second set were better. They aren't really a premium product and the price reflects this in regards to shock absorbers. I can't be bothered pulling the things out at low milages just to get them rebuilt when other brands go the distance of 2 or 3 times without issue. As always with cheaper products some are ok and last others fall apart quickly - luck of the draw.

So can the Ultimate struts be rebuilt? Does anyone know the cost of this? If I can find someone with an old set of OEM struts I could borrow I can remove the Ultimate ones and send them off to be rebuilt!

Yes, they can be rebuilt for little dollars. But yeah bit of a pain if you've got nothing to use in while you wait. For this reason alone I'll be getting them to send me brand new struts without springs.
