MN Exhaust

Postby RossyB07 on Tue Nov 29, 2011 7:01 pm

Alright guys, hope I've got this in the right place & reason for posting I couldn't find sufficient info on various aftermarket exhausts for the MN.

Maybe we could even start a thread just for the exhaust ??

Probably already covered in another thread. For ML's.

Do a search and you will find it ;) .

Yea, you wont find a lot other here on MN other than sterling (I have this system) and Beaudesert systems.
plenty others out there alike of manta etc that do nice custom jobs.

It appears most are quite happy with the highly underrated factory pea shooter.

I wont post on my findings until we see where this thread heads. Sure I have seen bits and pieces on MN somewhere.

MN Exaust

Postby RossyB07 on Tue Nov 29, 2011 8:56 pm

I'm sure I've seen posts on MN exhausts aswell but nothing that's easy to find. Bits & pieces scattered. I rang up Scott's rods & they don't have anything for the MN yet. Early next year they will be selling a 3" system. Beaudesert exhausts have a 2 3/4" system available but would love to find more info/results from peeps

I have a Beaudesert system, seems to have less lag, not noisy but does take away some of the tinny sound of the standard system. Slight increase in power. Overall worth doing. I thnk anyway!.

I have a 3inch stainless from the dump pipe back, I think it runs better, but I also have a DP chip. Next thing is to get a 3inch dump pipe to help move the heat.Car running on the highway at 450-500 EGT, Tony would like to hear your educated views.

What price are people paying for the Beaudesert exhausts? One of the companies we work with Sydney (Mercury Mufflers) gets their 2 3/4" Exhausts from Beaudesert. They come with a highflow cat and look pretty decent. If there is enough interest, I can look at running a group buy on them. They have ones to suit both the ML and MN.

I may add, do your research on quality etc, as you obviously are. You get what you pay for these days. Cheaper systems may bite you on the arse. Not an issue for me as can do my own repairs etc.

those wondering, the ML and MN run same system other than the dump, Be very easy for any company to make the dump suit the MN from their ML systems.
3" is overkill unless chasing huge numbers and need to get rid of the heat.

I actually think the factory system is well up to spec on stock to mild tunes. The factory dump is quite good on the MN. ;)
Also, keep in mind, with the variable geometry turbo you cant actually pick up the flange with 3". 2&3/4 is plenty.

I was doing some work on the pressure drops with the MN's system. (Have run out of time) looks like with milder tuning the 2&3/4 back to 2&1/2 behind dump then back to 2&1/4 for tail retains good flow and scavenges best with out big pressure losses.
On wilder tunes we need the bigger system to get rid of the heat.

Got me buggered why they dont make them 3" and drop back to at least 2&3/4 for the tail section. Be cheaper, quieter, easier to fit larger spare, and theoretically give a tad more off boost torque.

When hot air cools it becomes much denser. cools around 200c every 6"'. (this is why we use intercoolers on the pressure side of the forced induction)
With oversized exhaust, the gas cools, becomes much denser, losses velocity, falls into a void them actually can become more restrictive as wont scavenge.

Ouch!! I paid 1300 sumtin to my door
So a 2&3/4 is not bad after all.
A group buy sounds like a good idear as well

MN Exhaust

Tony love your work mate. Good stuff you got there. Weighing up between a 3" or 2 3/4" system was my main concern as I want most power/ torque out of the standed engine & able to handle possible chip in the future.

ML. 2 3/4 aluminised mild steel with all bits including DUMP and EGT probe fitting, high flow CAT (it is part of the dump section), straight through high flow muffler and all other bits required (except for flange gasket off back of turbo which is reusable apparently).

$1126.50 delivered to Sydney. This did include the 10% 4WD Action DVD discount which recently ended (10% off plus 50% off delivery). You could only ask if they could extend it a few days?

On full pricing it would be approximately another $155 on top of that, so approx $1280 delivered to Sydney.

Call them and ask for Noel. Not sure if MN prices are the same.

For me i went this way because i heard the Sterling was not great quality and the Scott Rods which many people have is full 3 inch and i want to maximise chances of larger spare and also not to noisy as i have kids in back on longer trips. I think the Scott Rods is currently about $990 delivered to Sydney so a bit cheaper.

I don't know what the quality is like but when fitted i will post about it.

MN Exhaust

Postby Kegsy on Wed Nov 30, 2011 2:06 pm

Beaudesert kit is the goods.

I run it in my truck. Nice and quiet except for insane levels of turbo whistle.

IMO only get an exhaust on an mn if your going to chip it up or tune it, otherwise your just wasting money... Go buy some tyres or something instead.

As for the price, I can't remember. For stuff like this you really need to spend the coin though, cheap exhausts are just a false economy when it comes to performance and longevity.

Exactly.

Before I had mine tuned and I had the exhaust, gains were minimal.

There was some gain. Spooled ever so slightly quicker, sounded better  , but really to pay $1800 (found my invoice) its just not $1800 worth of gains if Im being honest. If you want sound, just delete the muffler and get a reso put in its place. Much cheaper.

Once you tune the car its a different story though, that exhaust will be worth the coin.

If you have a limited budget and want some extra poke, I'd look at a Sprint Booster, EGR blank and Throttle Body bypass. Its an awesome combo, and you really haven't changed the car much.

Spot on Kegsy. I am very happy with my Beaudesert S/S system and it works well with other mod's.

Otherwise, if not modifying, the stock system is fine.
