Brown Davis Long Range Tank MN

Postby MICK_ on Mon Sep 05, 2016 4:43 pm

Good afternoon ladies and gentleman, just ordered my new long range tank from Brown Davis 138Lt, 132Lt usable.

Anyone have one??? And what are your thoughts...

I ordered it at the last 4x4 show, $1095 fitted, couldnt help myself. Went to all of the usual suspects, Long Range Automotive, ARB, Outback Accessories... Brown Davis were the cheapest and had the largest capacity.

Feedback would be helpful.

Cheers Mick

Love my long ranger
1150 between fills for a fill of 118 litres when the light comes on.
Pushed another 100 km out of the tank before I chickened out. Prob could have got another 50 to 100 easy.
hangs a bit low though and no longer 135l
Used to contact the bottom of the cab at times but a little work with a slogging hammer and dolly, all sorted. :D

Mick,
Had mine for 3 years now. No problems. Fuel warning light comes on with about 20 litres left, i.e. 110 to 115 litres used, depending on whether going up or down hill. Takes a bit to get the last few litres in. Have done Alice Springs to Halls Creek with plenty left. Range is about 1000k with camper on the back. I carry a couple of jerry cans on the trailer for long runs, like Booroloola to Cloncurry the back way through Lawn Hill. 1500km then.

Anyone know if the TJM sits inline with the chassis rail or does it drop down like the others.?

I do quite a bit of 4wheel driving and don't fancy denting anything

Not where, coughy, but who. MICK_ does say Brown Davis but, since they are also the manufacturer, it may have been through a distributor. A fair question, I would have thought.

I dunno about these things the math just dont Gel...

long range tank fitted $1000 - $1500 - extra fuel 50 - 60 Lt....

3 x 20 lt Jerry Cans $60.... Extra fuel 60 Lt

3 x 25 lt Diesel Fuel containers - $75 - extra fuel 75 Lt ...

Fuel gauge still works and when im not travelling they sit in the shed so less carried weight = better fuel economy.....

Just a thought...

Pat.

The other benefit too, if you hole one, you only lose 20-25lts, not the lot. 6 to 1, 1/2 dozen the other, l can see pro's and cons for both.

Each to their own... I know I wouldn't be without my LR tank.
And Jerry cans are a total PITA.

Extra space in the tub? Depends on the vehicle too. I can't carry jerry cans in the Pajero so a long range tank is my only option if I need the range.

Another pro is the money saved if not needing to buy fuel in remote areas. I saw, just recently, a report where fuel cost $3.60/litre. Wouldn't take too many purchases at that kind of money to pay for a long range tank.

At the moment I do 180 to and from work every day.
I fill once a week instead of every 2 1/2 days.
much more convenient.
not always about the cost
And I dont have to worry about jerry cans floating around the back.
Ive done jerry cans on big trips. Pain in the arse IMHO

Has anyone had a look at these tanks? http://www.gough.com.au/tuffagear.htm They have a 100L under tray tank for $587.40. That would give you about 165l if you could add it as a second tank.

I fitted mine quite easily and I'm not that mechanically minded.
Jerrys take up space. I use alot of gravel roads when touring and filling via jerrys regularly increases the risk of fuel contamination and can be messy.
As for the weight/fuel economy when not required, you don't have to fill it all the way.
I love mine 1200km to a tank if needed.
But if I'm with others that don't have one I'm stopping anyway.

While diesel is safer to carry in the rear tub/canopy of course than petrol, (which i wouldn't do on a long trip due to explosive hazard) I have seen it spilt (including my car on my recent desert trip where i had long range + jerries) and diesel smell through alll your camping gear is a real bummer. eh 26

I was a bit resistant for the reasons some have stated here but when the opportunity to get one for a good price (second hand) i went for it. One of the best mods in my opinion.

Don't try and substantiate it on cost because you wont be able to. Certainly not much point if you keep your car for a few years and don't do bigger trips beyond the local town of course. That said i find it is best for those trips where i can get to where i go and back on the one tank (like my mates property or my parents place up the coast) which are both around four hours drive away. No half fills or top ups required at random servos at 2.00am in the morning.

The 'flexibility' and 'options' it gives you on a trip is worth every penny. Even around town it just means less worrying about how much fuel you have in traffic etc. if you are unlucky enough to live in Sydney

Advantages like not having to fill up 10 minutes before you need to be somewhere, or it is pissing down rain, or you are on your way home from a trip and all the kids are asleep in the car, or it is pricey at a particular location, and as Garth says - just means you fill up half as often. How many times do you need to fill up in your good clothes and get smelly diesel on your hands no matter how hard you try not too.

There are people who never would buy one and there are those who have bought one and long forgotten the cost of it while they enjoy the benefits of it.

Love my long range tank. :D 8-)
This car is like a bad drug habit. It is taking all my money and time, my family are concerned, but new mods just feel sooooooo good.

I have a dirty area (tub) and a clean area back seats
I had 1 jerry can out of 6 vent a little
And a little looks (and smells) like a lot

I would love along range tank, but there are always other things more important to spend money on, even when I was towing a caravan

long range tank keeps the weight a bit lower to the ground also, as oppose to gerrys in the back

But not when your talking 200lts of diesel
Up against the headboard is nearly as good as between the chassis rails

And distributed centrally left and right is actually better than all on the passenger side

I'd like the tub tank by brown Davis
But ain't found my money tree
