LRA / Long Ranger / or Brown Davis

Postby gazman152 on Fri Dec 13, 2013 8:42 pm

Any thoughts or experiences re the three long range tanks? They are all around the same price. The lRA and long ranger are 120lt and 125lt respectively. Tempted by the Brown Davis as it's 135lt. A hard to ignore larger capacity. Heard of a few quality issues with the Brown Davis though. The LRA is highly rated by the Toyota and Nissan mobs. ( yes I spy on their forums - know your enemy ) Thought I'd put it to the brains trust out there.

Do you go offroad much? I gather one important difference is that some sit further below the chassis rail than others. I think ironman was maybe selling one too, but I'd be guessing the quality might not be up there with the others.

Yeah. Fair bit off road. Does one allow more clearance than the others? I'm aware they hang down more than stock. Guess I just want to invest in the best overall quality.

Yeah I'm not sure which is which but I've seen some dented which is why I asked if that was an issue. You can buy a tank protection plate but I guess if the tank sat too low the plate might not fit.

Thanks Cowboy Dave. I'll do some research on the three re their dimensions although I reckon they will probably all hang around the same. Cheers.

Long range fuel tanks

Postby mattz on Sat Dec 14, 2013 12:43 am

I'm pretty sure that all hang below the chassis.
I know,my longranger does. It doesn't hang below the chassis much........not enough to worry about (IMO)unless you go really hard core off road.
They hang a little further below the chassis towards the rear of the vehicle, but that's near the rear diff and wouldn't make much difference either as the tail shaft and diff would be more susceptible to being damaged or hung up before the tank would be damaged ( at the rear of the tank anyway)
I get off-road fairly often and haven't sustained any damage........yet.

TBH.....I haven't heard any bad reports about the ironman one and it was considerably cheaper when I was shopping around but the didn't have stock at the time.
The only major thing I've heard wrong with the Brown Davis one is a clearance issue with the floor pan and they had a few weld issues earlier on which they seem to have over come.

If I remember in the morning I'll take some measurements of how much the Longranger hangs below the chassis.

My Brown Davis sits around 25 to 35 mm below the chassis and has some major dents in it. :P
So much so that I now have to pull it out to repair a cracked weld :(

The tank has about 18mm clearance to the passenger side chassis rail. When I fitted my sliders, I had to modify the slider rear bracket to fit but this left no room for the handbrake cable. The handbrake cable now sits exposed on the bottom of the chassis rail. Not the best position but it does get some protection form the tank  It hasn't been damaged yet.

I didn't have the fitting issues that srb has on the previous page. Just over 2hrs from go to beer on my own.
I haven't noticed the cab clearance issue that others talk about, although there is that noise I have been chasing for the last 2 years. :?

The 4wd systems one that I have doesn't hang below the chassis rail but you also don't get as much fuel! Your about 10-15ltr less than all these others.

has ANYONE invested in one of these and can provide some advice. i like the idea of the second tank but i reckon it would be a bugger to fill.

looking for experiences.

A couple of members had installed these and they had issues filling as the line between main and aux tanks was only 6mm from memory so took a long time to fill aux, there were also air pocket issues. One member got his sorted though but cant remember how. Sorry Mark

Just thought I'd mention a small problem that I discovered with my Brown Davis LR tank... :-?
During the weekend we went wheeling for the first time with this new tank and found that the bloody tail shaft hits on the edge of the tank. :-o The noise it made scared the crap out of me as I'd thought I'd blown my diff. After some head scratching we quickly discovered that when the axle flexes up on the passenger side the tail shaft bolts (bolt to the rear diff) were rubbing on the lower corner of the tank. :x.
There was nothing we could do on the track so I just put up with the noise.:roll: I was just happy that my my diff was ok.

Had another look today to see if I could adjust the tank across but no way. Looking like the lump hammer will come out again.

Anyone had this issue with their Brown Davis tank? Or am I the only lucky one.

Actually I did removed my tail shaft spacer to move the bolt pattern back which might have then been enough space but the bolts I had were just too long so I couldn't try that. So it might only be a problem for those that have the tail shaft spacer. :-?

This was after I used the lump hammer to make a bit of a dent. :-?

I flexed it up on some ramps but it still makes contact. not sure if I want to make more of a dent so now I'm now waiting for Brown Davis to reply to my email.

The part thats rubbing is right on the end of the uni joint on the tail shaft. It only makes contact when axle gets flexed up on full travel on the passenger side.

Ok I sorted the issue with my BD tank. :D
The problem was not the tank but with the factory mounting on the rear crossmember. As some will know.. Not all Tritons are made equally. Anyway I used a die grinder to slot the rear mounting holes on the tank so I could move it across 5mm. Wasn't too painful in the end as I didn't have to completely remove the tank. I should have spotted this when I was doing the installation, the clue should have been the diff lock compressor bracket not fitting.. BD also have had this issues on other types vehicles on occasions, their solution is often the same as what I employed.
So anyway I gave it a good flex up at ZigZag on the weekend and had no more problems. :D
