Now I am more confused than ever after reading this whole thread on what long range tank to get. I have a 2013 MN GLX-R dual cab and will be looking to do a Northern/Central Australia trip later in the year. Currently, my ute gets approx 520-570kms from the standard tank, running in and around town, with the occasional play in the dirt. That being said, my Triton carries a lot of weight with the bullbar, siderails/steps, winch, canopy, bash plates, rear bullbar/towbar, ARB roof rack/cage, 33inch BF MT's and a family of 4 inside. Before the lift kit, side rails and muddies I was getting 700-750ish before warning light would appear :(

My aim/goal would be to achieve 950kms minimum from what ever tank I put on, running muddies and all the gear etc. I will ring around tomorrow and see what I can find and how much. Don't really have a budget in mind and would prefer quality over price.

Will be interesting to see what I come up with I guess. Wish me luck

I get the same mileage on an average tank as you.

A log ranger tank at 135l will give you the range you want. Unfortunately installing these tanks mean that the handbrake cable is exposed to damage, as it must be moved, and unless they have changed the design the tank bumps against the bottom of the cab causing noise. The last can be fixed by modifying the floor pan with a lump hammer
Don't ask how I know
The 125l tanks don't have these problems

I would never deal with jerry cans again after having a long range tank.

Sort of like never going back to ice after getting a fridge. you don't know how good they are till you use one

Ive heard some disturbing comments recently.

The other thing I noticed with the long ranger brand tank is it hangs a bit lower than the standard tank

I have & recommend the Long Ranger 125lt, quality is good & there was no 'crap' in the tank.

fitted it in the driveway, but that was not an easy task. You need at least 2 people & preferably ramps.

It does hang a little lower but I have never had an issue with this.

I don't have great economy with the 3.2 & all the extra weight I carry & towing camper on trips. Working on 14-15 LHK fully loaded I have a range around 800-850km with a bit to spare.
On outback trips I also carry a couple of jerry cans for added security.

The low fuel light comes on with 20lts in tank which gives me about 100+km

Just been ringing around and ARB are about to release a Plastic/Polymer tank with a 7-9mm wall thickness for the Tritons. Apparently because of its design, the capacity should be up around the 140-150ltr mark and im told about $200-300 cheaper than a Long Ranger

see here - http://www.arb.com.au/frontier-long-range-fuel-tank/

Im waiting for a confirmed price and capacity but it looks the go I reckon.

Will keep you posted :)

At present for the MQ only, they will do earlier models at some stage.

Just had a Davis Brown 135 ltr fitted to my MN. I have had no issues to date. No noises. Clocked up 500 k's before the gauge moves and the scan gauge indicates about 1500k range mostly highway driving. It also is designed to fit the MQ. Very happy with my purchase.

Hi guys,

Just returned home from getting my new, long range fuel tank installed. Ended up going with the 125Lt Ironman tank as I found a 4x4 shop that was able to supply and fit it about $300 cheaper than anywhere else I got quoted.

So far I've done approx 130kms and the gauge is still showing as full, however the trip computer is only showing a range of 500kms and a fuel consumption of 14.9km/100

I guess its going to take a couple full tank cycles for the trip computer to accurately calculate range remaining and fuel consumption :(

Will provide further feedback once it sorts it self out (I hope)

Hey mate, the std trip meter will never show correct range, it works off the fuel level indicator, which is calibrated for std size tank. As you are noticing, you can do a couple of hundred km's before the guage starts to move, and you will find the range to empty just stays ay 550km or so, until the point when the original guage starts to drop, then the range will decrease. However, with the tank also being slightly wider/longer, the actual distance to empty range will be greater than the guage shows, due to actually more fuel being in the tank. My range to empty stops between 50-80km to go, and is reasonably accurate (ran out 110km after the guage shows blank), but when my range starts dropping from 550, I actually have around 700km range left. It gets more accurate as it decreases due to volume difference getting smaller, but will never be truly accurate.

Just a follow up since the install,

I done a mix of highway (110kmh) driving as well as in town running around and approx 250kms of off-road cruising and ended up filling up. The tank was not empty, but I couldn't pass up the chance on 94.9c premium diesel :D

Ended up getting 717kms from 91.54ltrs (refill). That gives me a rough 12.76ltrs/100

Worth noting, this was with my rig fully decked out and a family of 4. The fuel gauge was still showing over 1/4 with 717kms under my belt and the tank still had roughly 30+ltrs so all in all, very happy.

Tonight I changed out the 33inch BF muddies and went back to factory 17inch alloys so I can run them out before putting ATs on them so this should see a noticeable increase in range yet again :)

Can anyone tell me if the fuel gauge is correct with a long range tank? Is half a tank half a tank I guess is what I'm asking. I fitted mine 2 weeks ago and currently have 770kms on the clock and just about at half way. Can I expect another 770 or do they drop away quickly after half due to tank shape?

I used to get just under 1000km from my tank
300km odd before the needle started moving.
About 300km from half way.

I had the 125ltr Ironman tank installed in mine and I found that the needle would start to move around 350-380kms and by the time it reaches just above 1/4 I have done around 750kms.

Keep in mind though that I have never ran mine till fuel light comes on, but the most it has taken at the pump was 93ltrs when I had already done just under 800kms so not too bad hey :)

Thanks guys. When I installed I put 15ltrs in and the fuel lights was on. Handy to know. I intend on running it til the light comes on then see what it takes. I'm hoping for 1100 plus.

When I fitted mine I put 20lt in before the light went off. So I have a range of about 150km from low light on.

I do about 300 before the gauge starts to move & the last 1/4 drops away pretty quick

well. yesterday not today, took the long ranger 125l tank out of the ml and put it into my mn, I unbolted the tail shaft on the ml when removing it , but I was able to leave tail shaft in place when I fitted it to the mn, just have to jack the arse off the ground by about a foot and it will slip in there on the angle, by the way I did this on my own too in the driveway, also as I have factory D/L in the mn so had to move the compressor and lengthen the air line a little for where I moved it to, took me about 4 hrs all up, went for a run last night to the airport to pick my old lady up and got just over 300ks before the needle moved, hoping for over a 1000, but see how it goes, will be great on trips as it will be 2 less jerrys I'll have to carry, I usually carry 5 on trips so will be able to carry that weight a bit lower to the ground too which is good !

Had anyone run their ironman tank dry? I'm wondering if the pick up is low enough to draw the full capacity of the tank. I've got mine to 117ltrs, I'd done 160km after the light went on and got scared so I filled it. Would be handy to know.

I had a really good run out of my last fill. :D

125l LongRanger, 900km till light & 963km when I lost my nerve & filled her up. 115.8lts (add 3% to that distance to correct reading too. so really 991km)

12LHK, pretty happy with that, considering all the extra weight I lug around. 3.2l ML on 31" wheels, front & rear bar, winch, canopy, aux batt, under tub water tank, roof bars, rack & 2" lift.

Has anyone heard anything more about the ARB frontier tank for the MQ? It sounds like a good option to me...
