I have a MY14 mn GLX+ manual and its returning figures of 10.5l /100ks. That hasn't really changed since adding all the bar work, winch, Dual batteries, under body protection, snorkel and EGR blank. I am expecting an increase when i lift it and add the 285/75 16s hopefully not to much though. It has 3200ks on the clock and so far has only done mostly around town driving .

terrible fuel economy MN triton

Postby hogdogger on Fri Jul 01, 2016 10:11 am

hi guys, first post. recently brought a 2nd hand mn triton with 60000 k on the clock went well for the first tank.or 2 of fuel now I've noticed I'm struggling to get 450-500 to a tank all I have done is replaced tyres from 265/60/17 to 265/75/16 so slightly bigger have also fitted a steel tray. seems to be losing more n more power each day goin up hills I'm wondering if this is a carbon issue or dirty sensor somewhere? has a snorkle bullbar n all the bells n whistles on it aswell. anyone else had this problem? any suggestions as to the cause?

Cleaning the MAF is cheap and easy to do.

Is your fuel and air filter clean?
Are valve clearances correct?
There are a few types of fuel injector cleaner. Some stronger than others. Eg some are every 5000km and some once a tank.
Bigger tyres and a tray will make a difference. If bells and whistles is weight that is bad too.
L per 100km is a better way to quote fuel usage.
Manuals seem to use 8 to 12l per 100km. A lot depends on how you drive.

It seems there are few fans here but it was popular on New Hilux at one stage (I haven't looked for a long while). If you use a can and the your Triton ends up looking like Puff The Dragon maybe inlet is blocked.

Just came back from a 4000 k trip towing a van and averaged 23 litres per hundred k's.
Could not get much more than 300 k to a tank . Used to get 16 when I first bought it.

My MN 53,000ks on it now with tonys mod gets 7.9 on the highway and 9.0 around town now how I do this you wonder,

Well the setup is 265/75R16 tyres AT stock suspension no bull-bar manual and a few extras maybe 100kg over stock.

On the highway I sit on 100ks 4th gear the car cruises on 7.0-9.9 depending on road, wind, incline now I know this is slower then he 110 rated speed but in 5th gear with the bigger tires 5th gear lags its always trying to boost up and it always feels like its struggling up hills etc.

So 4th on the highway bit slower then normal and cruise I always slow down for people to over take btw.

Around town is always slow speed build I am lucky as my drive is a 90kph road to a 60kph road to work so it sits in 4th and chugs along but traffic lights etc always sloooooow speed build up these things on boost will blow your fuel figures away very quickly.

I recently bought a camper trailer and I am curious to know the impact that will have I also run fuel doctor in every 3rd tank.

my 2 c

.these are my fuel figures for a resent trip around WA
Starting at a servo in Netley SA and finishing at the same servo.
K`s done 26.631
Lts used 3.201.
K`s per lt 8.3196
Lts per 100 ks 12.03.
Cost of fuel$5.136.36
Cheapest fuel Netley $ 105.3 p/lt
Dearest Warburton $2.06 p/lt
I am very impressed with the figures as I was towing a van for possibly 60% of the time and a good amount of that was on dirt with around 1000ks plus on sandy and muddy tracks using 4wd, with some in lowrange. I also did a lot of 4x4 work without the van where distances were upto 200k`s at a time in 4wd with quiet a bit in lowrange.
My van is a 2001 Supreme Get away. it`s 14ft 6long and is 6ft 6 wide, tips the scales at around 1800 kgs. and it`s just above the the tow vehicle height in towing mode.On the highway I found the best economy was at about 90ks per hour, depending on the wind.

Just added a canopy, and new grabbers AT2 265 70 16, measured the diam is close to 30inch cf AT3 coopers worn down to the indicators and diam close to 29inch. Now fuel use is 10.7/L cf 9.7/L prior to change ML triton and that's about what I expected with the extra weight, more aggressive tread pattern and larger rolling diameter. Love the grip from the tyres and flex from the tread depth and great on wet hard surface, tried to break them free on the wet round a bout and they just held on, great in the bush 4WD and yet to try them in the mud/shaly clay...wet on the round a bout with the worn AT3 I could break the grip very easily. You can't expect to not use more fuel with add ons, drag factors and rolling diameter/grip factors and by enjoying the thrust from the 3.2 up hills with the boot applied..

the old school way fill it to the brim reset the odo once i am at the location re fill to the brim again this includes generally start stop traffic then calculate how much fuel it took to travel the Kms last time I got 8.4 using this same method over 550ks.

Only thing I can think of the gearbox might not like being put into 4th for so long so I regulate it long straight no hills into 5th once hills etc start again back to 4th.

seems to work for me anyways.

I am picking up the camper this weekend to test plus it was just serviced so all should be new fresh so its a good gauge on what I should be expecting to receive

I will update when I get some figures

Ok so I bought the camper filled up and done the trek from Perth to Geraldton,

My results prior to camper I was getting about 7.9-8.8 depending on lots of factors wind aircon etc.

So I bought the camper then the misses went to IKEA so we loaded another 200kg in so I was pulling roughly a tonne of weight.

I returned a result of 11.4 liters per 100k now it was purely 4th gear on the hills and a tad of 5th in the very straight sections about 40ks of the whole trip I sat on 97KPH and it was a great drive in essence I use generally just under 3 quarters of a tank of fuel so normally between half and 3 quarters now on this trip with the camper plus extra weight I used 3 quarters of fuel going by the gauge.

Personally I thought I was going to use more but it wasn't to bad the car was just serviced before we went so everything was fresh and new.

Not bad for the rig but it was a gutless boat on the way home pulling that load.
