From memory though the stock fuel gauge will stay full for a long time but kick into action once the fuel level is back where the sender expects it to be, so you'll still have a needle that slowly marches towards empty. If you drive it til the empty light goes on, then refill, you should have a good idea of how much is left in the new tank when the light comes on in future.
