FWIW the dealer wiped my ECUtek tune at a recent service :evil: :evil: and i can tell you i massively miss the tune. The difference in the low end (ML 3.2) is huge and makes the 'drivability' far less enjoyable.

You sort of get used to the power and you think it isn't going too well until the tune gets wiped and you feel like you are going backwards............... :roll: :lol: :lol: :lol:


How did you go with the MKIII chip snowman? How does it compare to the ecu tune?

Although they raise some valid points in the "article", such as working with a reputable tuner, the whole thing is clearly written with a bias towards chips. They even follow the advertorial up with a direct link to Steinbauer chips, as they are a Steinbauer agent.

Some of the alleged advantages of the chip are a stretch; such as the ability to remove the chip and "recoup" the cost. The fact is that when you fit the chip to your new vehicle, there will undoubtedly be dyno tuning involved, which carries a cost. I have personally seen $600+ chips that contain very little in the way of electronics, offer no EGT interface for protection, and are advertised as plug-n-play. Both solutions have reputable brands, fitted and dyno tuned by people who know their stuff. Companies like Chiptune (chips) and ECUTEK (remap) stand behind their products.

Given that a reputable, dyno tuned chip, and a reputable dyno tuned ECUTEK update are now similarly priced, it also removes cost as a factor.

I can provide similar links to articles that are biased towards tuning.

Obviously, I'm a fan of the remap as the preferred option. :lol:

A remap from a reputable tuner is certainly the most 'slick' option but definitely not for me.

The advantages of a remap are clear but they're horribly over priced imho. Yes you're paying similar money for a high quality chip but at least you own the stupid thing.

I still have an old school rail chip that I purchased back in 2011. It's was the best chip you could buy back then but there's better out there now.

I've never really seen the value in having mine put on a dyno... Only seat of the pants dyno, Big hills, black smoke, egts, boost gauge and AFR gauge... A lot of mucking around and not for everyone but I would back mine against majority of 're-map tunes'

Both options have their pros and cons... The best option is the one that suits you.
