engine slow to start

Postby SLIMaxPower on Wed Aug 26, 2015 12:56 pm

I have noticed the last week or so since I have added some mods and such that the engine is taking more goes to start.

After heating glow plugs the engine takes 2 or 3 seconds to start, whereas it used to be instantaneous.

uniflow filter, then Donaldson 3um secondary filter, then Tony's EGR module and Dawes valve.

How old is the battery? They also become a little lethargic in winter.

Is the filter oiled correctly, over oiling can cause them to gasp for air. Did you change the primary fuel filter, if not it may also be clogged and restricting fuel flow.

Shouldn't be the Dawes or EGR module.

Make sure the fuse block on battery terminal to glow plugs is not kaput.

Do you do enough kilometres each day to get a decent charge in the battery?

check battery with mutimeter and see what it is at static volts
then get some one to crank it and measure what it drops to in the cold morning
sounds like battery is getting sad and dropping volts at crank and cca is down to by the sounds of it

mine was same placed a new 860cca and it flips it on it lid now if held in the turn key position to long...

it doesn't matter how many times you think you are glowing the plugs by turning the key on 3/4 times, there not really glowed. leave the key on until you hear a clunk behind the glove box, about 10 seconds

The only change is the time it now takes to start. The cranking sound of the starter motor and engine are as fast as before this problem, so it doesn't seem to be a battery/charge.

It's just taking longer to fire. Has to be a fuel issue ? When I installed the secondary filter I used the primer on top of the OEM fuel filter to fill the Secondaries Filter resulting in the water bowl to be full of fuel? Mine is installed lower than I would have liked as I hadn't made a bracket so its bolted back firewall. If I can find some red braided fuel line i will move it higher and add a hose to the bowl.

The air filter was installed out of the bag, the wrong way at first ehe.

On the way home the turbo seemed not wanting to do any boost. Sitting at 80 km/h on the fway in 4th, put my foot down and all i get its black smoke and my EGT's screaming to 600C i'm like wtf.

I saw on a "4wd show" last night who one of their "sponsors" saying you shouldnt tow in 5th gear is that correct ? Something about 4th gear being 1:1 wheres 5th is at the back and puts extra load on the gears.

ps.

Maybe this should be in the rant thread.

I tow a 2 t caravan and only use 4th. I only sit around 90kph and this gives about 2400 rpm which I think is a good place in the powerband. I feel I get good fuel economy at 14 l/ 100 k.
But if you were only towing a light load then 5th gear would be ok
