ECU remap black smoke

Postby fartinfreddy on Sun Jan 17, 2016 5:25 pm

Hi all, I've just had a 3" exhaust with hiflow cat fitted and an ECU remap done at Manta on my 2.5 MN. It was a low level remap more for towing, not sports driving.
I'm now blowing a heap of black smoke under acceleration to the point of expecting a yellow sticker.
They lowered the fuel at least once but still blowing heaps.
Air filter looks fine, cleaned the mass air sensor and have just added the first dose of Moreys diesel smoke killer. Recently had a new turbo fitted through Midland Mitsi.
Hoping others have solved a similar issue or have some ideas.

No idea seek professional advice.

Google finds
BLACK SMOKE is the most common smoke emitted from diesel engines. It indicates poor and incomplete combustion of the diesel fuel. There are many causes, including

Incorrect timing
Dirty or worn injectors
Injectors sticking open too long (Common Rail Diesel type)
Over-fuelling
Faulty turbocharger (ie not enough air to match the fuel)
Incorrect valve clearance
Incorrect air/fuel ratio
Low cylinder compression (eg sticking piston rings or worn components)
Dirty air cleaner
Restricted induction system (eg system too small or kinked inlet piping)
Carboned up intake manifolds (esp Common Rail Diesels)
Other engine tune factors
Poor quality fuel
Excessive carbon build up in combustion and exhaust spaces
Cool operating temperatures

To much fuel or not enough air or both generally.
I'd be taking it back for them to look at as it may also be something else like a suction control valve.

Mine has only 35,000km and since I sent it in for the coolant recall it dumps heaps of black smoke even driving it calmly, don't know if that adds annother price to the puzzle, complete stock other than egr blocked

take it back, the recall shouldn't have any thing to do with fuel.

Gonna see if the local mechanic can fit me in tomorrow otherwise see if I can get the ecu put back to standard and see if the smoke stops.

Back to Manta today - they've wound back the fuel and the smoke has gone. Suggestion was made that the injectors may need to be checked.
Got some more money to spend but more than happy with their service and the outcome so far.

Probably the wrong thread for this but I rang them and they said they will look at it on the 30k service, I told them I got it done somewhere else already cause they wanted over $1200 for it. Then it started... Bodgey mechanics can't look after a Mitsubishi , you get what you pay for , blah blah.
He says the 30k service includes a valve kit that cost of parts is over $400 and that hasn't been done so. Bring it in and we will only charge you for that plus labour and do the valves
Sounds like bullshit to me

if you have had a ecu remap and had a coolant recall it wipes out the tune in the ecu
