Seeking more power

Postby Greggy.d on Tue Jan 31, 2017 8:56 pm

Hi everyone,

I have a 2008 ML(09) triton glx-r 3.2L auto

I have a caravan I regularly tow, or boats, jet skis etc. And am looking for some more grunt to do so. Ever since I have owned it it has seemed somewhat sluggish inparticular towing anything.

I should mention my fuel economy is pretty ordinary also. But I have put that down thus far to bull, roof bars, kayak rack etc. It seems to suck more on the highway which seemed strange even when I'm taking it easy.my 62 to 63L might get me 500 to 550 km if im lucky and not carrying towing anything. When towing jayco swan... maybe 350 to 400km if there arent to many hills. Is this normal??

Anyone got any suggestions as to where to start?

My thoughts are do I go for exhaust, turbo upgrade, power chip or has anyone else got magic solutions for me to try?

Cheers guys

Greggy

Is the inlet manifold full of sludge? Do you have the EGR closed off?

The quest for more power starts with an engine in good condition. A good comprehensive service by a quality diesel workshop. As above is the inlet manifold clean?

63L and 550km is about 11.5L per 100km not bad for an Auto with mods.

63L and 350km is 18L per 100km not unheard of for and auto towing a van depending on driving conditions.

Clean inlet manifold and block egr.
Full 3" exhaust preferably but if on a budget, at least replace the restrictive oem dump pipe
Ecu reflash either ecuteck or alientech software depending on tuner preference.
No need for turbo upgrade

Thanks for the tips. Manifold probably due for another clean. Egr sounds worth inquiring/digging into. Ill put exhaust on the wanted to buy list!@

It has been proven that a 3" exhaust gives no noticeable performance gains.
will drop the EGT though

I have the same model and drivetrain as you also. I started with a snorkel then a 3 inch exhaust finished off with a "Agri Tune" ecu tune with a manifold clean.

Absolutely love it now, tows like a champ and fuel economy has improved so long as you keep your right foot under control which can be a challenge :D :D :D

If your on a bare budget, the ECU Tunes are the best value for money in seeking performance IMHO.

What size tyres do you run. Simplest way for most to get more power and better economy is to go back to standards size tyres.
