Flashing 4WD Lights - Solenoids Replaced Under Warranty

Postby Mccann on Wed Jul 11, 2012 5:29 pm

To be specific on the problem, the front 4wd lights were flashing when in 2wd. This started while driving on the black top not a result of being bashed around 4wding. It is a 2009 ML 3.2 Manual.

So after many weeks of getting them to chase up Mitsubishi for an answer on the warranty, they finally replaced the solenoids (under warranty).

Initially they told me dirt/dust got in through the "filter" and clogged the "tee" piece which they cleaned out but it did not fix, so they assumed it was the solenoids.
On the service tax invoice (I received today (for $0.00)) the job description reads:
"4wd lights flashing on dash, looked at on RO P25614 requires new 4wd control solinoids.
vacuum solinoids open circuit.
tested and found vacuum solinoids open circuit. removed and replaced solinoids tested all ok."

And that's it. Drove home and the lights have stopped flashing :D But when I got home and had a look at the new solenoids I saw this.......

I got a free zip tie!
The new solenoids have the blue and yellow dot on them.
Should I be taking it back and requesting they replace the plug they broke? or will the "fix" they do cause more problems?

Take it back mate that's gambling with your safety
Imagine if that plug failed.
potentially putting the car into 4wd ... bang
Would be a scary moment.

edited for accuracy (cheers snoozy)

the 4wd system actually works reverse to that, which could be very nasty to the drive train

when the solenoids are off/disconnected the front diff is engaged.
that means you could be doing 110kmh down the freeway & all of a sudden the diff is in & screwing up the diff/cv's/transfer case, etc, not real good  :x

take it back I say

They will need to cut it off and re-crimp lugs and re-insert them into a new housing.
More difficult than it sounds. Chances of a screw up. I would say 50/50.

That said, I would carefully ask the question ;)

Sometimes indecipherable to the average Civillian. Example:

I clearly remember Joe stating categorically that he prefers it in the bottom
Joe:
I didn't say it was better in the bottom, I just said it was easier and quicker.

These solenoids will be an area to watch going forward.

The same solenoids are used from the early 90's pajeros and most older pajero's have the flashing lights syndrome.

Flashing lights can indicate a few issues, most likely the solenoid failure.

If anyone is interested, i have a few word docs for fault finding, maybe a friendly mod can post them for me ;)

The flashing light issue can be caused by a number of things
Faulty solenoids (as in the above case)
diff sensor switch
diff actuator
damaged vac hoses
damaged wiring
gearbox switches
& the electronic control box (above passenger footwell)

there is more info on the circuits & testing available in the Platinum area

Take it back and get them to sort because if you have problems in a few months they will blame you for the damage......
Or as Speedy Gonzalez once said, it won't hurt, did it
