Hi all,
Just wanted to share my recent experience with you all.
After completing the 75k service on a Monday (Mits dealer) I headed south of Sydney 600kms. And well didn't I make it.
During the trip I started getting a noise much like a passenger jet flying directly above me? It would come and go, no sign at all from dash lights or gauges? I'd stop, pop the bonnet and the noise would go before I could see or hear any more.
About 25kms from where I was headed the noise started again suddenly, the engine temp gauge rose quickly then the noise stopped- but this time the worlds biggest plume of steam began to escape from the engine bay?
I pulled over and turned the vehicle off and let it sit for about 25 mins before popping the bonnet again, this time there was evidence of coolant all through the engine bay and a smell I cannot describe. Funny thing was the coolant level in the overflow reservoir was fine and the engine was back at normal operating temp according to the gauges???
So I call the local Mits service guy, great team of people and it really shows the difference between city and country dealers, he asked several questions about temp and fluid all seemed ok again so he asked if I felt confident in getting the vehicle to him? I was fine with it as all signs where back to normal.
So I get the vehicle to the Mits dealer without further issue.
Outcome-
New engine, new radiator all under warranty, why?
Lifted head, Mits still cannot fault find the cause but potentials are head gasket, thermostat, piston liners or just plain unlucky......
Reason temp gauge didn't alert of temp rise was that whatever the cause has allowed exhaust gases to blow back through the coolant overflow (passenger jet noise) and created an air block around the temperature gauge hence giving false readings (something to note).
All along it seems the engine was slowly cooking itself, warping/lifting the head.
Mits Aust were very quick to provide a full, new engine under warranty, they did however dig thoroughly through the service book ensuring vehicle had been serviced on time every time.......it had. By them.
FYI- the 75k service had no part in the issue from what I can see, they don't touch cooling system at this service. The trip south was highway running, unloaded, just me the driver with an average road speed of about 95-105. Ambient temp was about 11 deg.
She's all good now, new engine has a few more added bits, particularly on the turbo?
I'm impressed with the regional Mits service team in a little town called WW!
Matt.
