Postby cruiserman_83 on Thu Aug 22, 2013 1:53 am

Hi All, Just had our 3rd gear Syncro replaced with 70000km on the Clock. Dealership is seeing approx one per month. fine on upshift but 3/4 time from 4th to 3rd it Baulks. Double clutch it and goes in every time. Anyone else come accros this issue?

One of the most common issues with the Tritons. They've changed the heat treatment on the 3rd/4th synchro hub now to stop the issue.

Mines starting to be a shitheap in 2nd and 1st,when its cold ,it wont go 2nd,and wont go 1st until cars has stopped completly
Warm its not as bad but still shyte, sometimes crunches going back or up into 2nd
Mines an aug built 2012 and has just clocked 9524k,yes not even 10,000ks yet, when i first got it it was crappy, replaced oil in box with synthetic which made a big difference, better changes but now its going back to its old cluncky box ways
So peed off with a new car thats worse to drive than my MK patrol

Had the 3rd and 4th syncro done at 35K, and roller hub bearings too,
Common issue- don't get angry with it and notify the service dept- they happily fix as it is common.
I got a new clutch plate apparently as it had excessive wear for 35k..

When i go for mines 1st service ill mention my clutch too
Still just under10k ,when i first got it the clutch took up just before half pedal travel, ive never towed a lthing yet, have not carried any loads in the back tray tub, most weight ive had in it is 4 medium people, now suddenly the clutch has just about dissapeared, engages right up the top of pedal travel, shes stock too with only an exhaust

It's a common problem alright, my work ute 2012 with 50K something and won't go into third gear on downshift 100% now, fine on upshift.......

Have to rev it during a double clutch to engage third gear on downshift, just like a Road Ranger non synchro box in a Truck

Long story here,
Had mine repaired for the 3rd gear issue at about 75k, did a trip out to the corner country and half way round found I had no low range 4wd, got stuck in sand towing a camper and burnt the crap out of the clutch. When I returned took it to the dealers and they replaced the clutch and fixed the low range issue. About a 2 months later took a trip with my trailer, got home and found oil all up the back of the car, back to the dealers, found the input shaft seal leaking, repaired again. 1 month later picked up a caravan and on the trip home "yep you guessed it" oil at the back of the car again, back to the dealers, input shaft seal gone again "must have been a faulty seal" Hmmm. All repaired again, just back home this week will see how it go's. Only good news in all of this is every thing has been done under warranty with no questions asked even the clutch which was probably partially my fault, but it has been a pain putting the car in all the time as I am 100km from the dealers.
The grass is only greener where you water it.

hi guys I'm also having some gearbox issues with my 2011 mn while 3rd gear is ok problem is when it is cold and not upto temp yet it's very hard to go from 3rd to 2nd and also have to come to a dead stop to be able to select 1st...while it's not so much of an issue for me couse I no my ute pretty well but if some one else was to drive it I'd say they would go wtf is going on??but when it is at running temp it is faultless and is no problem... I can get it fixed through warranty no doubt but dunno if I want them tearing my ute to bits jst yet with only 20k on the clock...I changed the oil in the box the other day and it made zero effect, and the original oil wasn't that bad really..qstn is do I jst see how it goes or what is ppl advice on this one??oh and one other problem I had was when I was out in the bush some time ago something happened and I wasn't able to select any gear at all ??wtf ?.After mucking around with both leavers for a bit and rocking the ute and stuff it came good and never happened since any one else had this?

Is the mn box same as the old rodeo box which you can only select 2nd under a certain speed? Just a thought.

Pretty common problem. I changed my oil to the penrite fully synthetic a while back which free'd it up when cold. Some others have been using ATF oil with success. Either way mention to your dealer and they may try to solve.

thanks gibbo..yeah the oil I put in it was only cheap shit....I run penrite in the donk so might try it in the box....full synthetic would be pricey I'd imagine ???

Hey guys my mn with 58k on the clock is now going into have the third gear synchro done one thing I pointed out to the dealer was it has developed a high pitch whine in the gearbox when it's accelerating 1, 2, 3 they said doesn't sound like gearbox but I don't know what else it could be i believe it may be mesh whine as i am running the atf fluid i may go back to the penrite synthetic as they don't do bearings whether do the 3rd gear synchro

The dealer rang & said my Triton is ready to be picked up....4 1/2 days..still not bad.
They said reverse was replaced as well as 3rd :o
I'll pick it up tomorrow as the dealer is 1 hour away & i'll find out the story behind reverse.
