timing belt out 3 teeth

Postby joelmusch on Tue Sep 03, 2013 6:34 pm

so the other week my triton wouldn't start, and 2 minutes before that it was running fine so i had put it down to fuel system issues with 63,000km on the clock as i didn't hear any knocks in the engine. got it towed to the dealer and it took them 6 days to find the problem. turns out my timing belt was out 3 teeth and seized up. the dealer didn't know how or why this happened but they fixed it all under warranty so I'm pretty happy about that. they also gave me a computer upgrade :) has anyone else heard or had this happen to them?

Never seen the triton do this, but having a vehicle roll backwards can cause them to jump.

i had it in the carport replacing the rear drum shoes and turned it on so i could turn the front wheels to bleed the front breaks then i turned it off for like 5 minutes then went to start it back up to go test the breaks and thats when it happened, pretty weird haha

Have had 2 tritons do that so far that have been towed into work.
Hopfully it's not a common thing!

Just had my tensioner bearing sh#t itself. Had the same problem drove it to play squash then came out and it wouldn't start! Had to get a tow! Had my mechanic look at it (not a mitsubishi dealer) and he showed me the shattered bearing! Not good! I thought it'd be a sh$t fight when I took it in to claim warranty, but they where all good about it. Lucky the Triton has a non compression engine in that it doesn't matter where your timing is it won't bend valves or anything!

Really?.......Only going on what the mitsubishi tech told me. Bloody Hell wonder how far out of time it has to be before it starts bending valves n stuff? Like I said my bearing was shattered so who knows what the timing was........

Yep, definately not a free running engine, not sure how many teeth exactly though it takes,

saw one that bent 6 valves and broke 4 rocker arms,

3 weeks ago arrived at work with a funny rattling noise coming from the top/front of the engine in my 2010 MN with 80000k on the odo. Noisy bearing type noise. Took car to Mits dealer to be told that timing belt tensioner bearing had collapsed. Top bearing pulley/cog was replaced under warranty, but new timing belt cost me $100.00 and then $100 to fit it. Thankfully they didn't hook-up their computer as it still had the Ecutek tune when i picked it up.

Why would you have to pay anything?

Mits service guy rang and said the belt was suspect and as belt was due for replacement in 20000k, it should be replaced now. In hindsight I should have demanded it replaced under warranty. Was more concerned with getting the car back as quick as possible.

We used to change belts and idlers every 80k on the older 4D56T in the MJ series as they were prone to spitting idlers.

I have a photo here of the latest 4D56 with head removed. No way they can be a free running engine as the pistons have small recesses in them just for the valves to work normally when timed up.

This engine had no 4 piston damaged due injector failure and high EGT's. (Standard vehicle no chip or tune)

The multi valve head and combustion chamber (Which is really in the piston)

Sooooo, I'm starting to think my mitsubishi tech was BULLSH$TIN ME!
Why would he say that? Maybe there's a problem? Would the engine still run if it had valve damage? Would you definitely be able to hear it?

I'm pretty sure you know if a valve is bent. More than likely that cylinder isn't going to fire.

It will be misfiring like a bastard. Bent valve = low/no compression. In a CI engine you'll soon know about it.

HI all, my 2010 triton seized a idler pulley on the timing belt at 97000km causing belt to shred!. Head replaced under warranty after 2 weeks of negotiations. Local service dealer was an absolute pleasure to deal with
