Steering rack warranty

Postby a9x_hatch on Fri Mar 07, 2014 6:09 pm

Hey guys just after a few opinions on a little issue I'm having with my stealer.
Well I noticed I had a bit of fluid coming from my drivers side steering rack boot, so I took into mitsubishi to get checked out only to find out i need a new steering rack, and I'm up for the cost, because they reckon there was a hole in the boot due to an impact. So they charged me $70 and I went outside jumped under my car to have a look and after 10mins I manage to Find a tiny hole about the size of a pin head, almost at the top of the boot (which rules out hitting anything). So I went back inside and questioned the head mechanic, who then went to say it must have happened when I had my diff rebuilt by opposite lock. ( mitsubishi pulled it out mind you and opposite lock rebuilt the locker and reinstalled it). And that even a hole that size can cause dirt and grit to get inside the boot which destroys the seal.

So next I went to opposite lock, because I wasn't prepared to wear the cost of something else I haven't done. They had a good look and disagreed with mitsubishi saying the whole was so small it couldn't let anything in especially considering it's only been 9 weeks since the rebuild, but still agreed to cover the cost of a seal kit ect or they would go me halves in a new steering rack, but they wanted me to get another opinion.

Next I took it into a local transmission shop who also specialises in steering racks. They totally agreed with opposite lock and said it should still be covered under warranty as there is no way that tiny hole could have caused the seal failure.

I called the stealer today who told me the warranty guy wasn't there today and that they will call me Monday. I totally understood mitsubishi not covering my diff due to the locker, then they denied warranty for a cv because they said it was failing due to suspension travel on hard lock which I was pissed about but took it on the chin, but this I think is ridiculous and I'm over it.
do you think I have a chance?

You're in the right place now. What is it they actually say is wrong with it that it needs replacing?

Are you running big tyres and/or lift?

There saying it' needs the seals redone in the rack, but there's a chance that won't work so I'd be better off just buying a new rack $2290 plus fitting. And yes I run 265/75/16 and 2 inch dobinson lift

WTF? Yeah I wouldn't be lying down for that one. Might be time for a new dealer. Where are you located? Sorry if that's in your profile but the ipad isn't showing it if it is.

I live in Mackay, and if your not a missive mining company buying a fleet they don't seem to give a rats arse about you.
It's the same at every dealer in town. May have to try Proserpine 130 km away it's just a long way to go to possibly get slapped with another bill.
Can mitsubishi Australia sort out this sort of problem?

Maybe but they're largely reliant on what the dealer tells them which could be your problem. Worth talking to them though. There's a good dealer in Brisbane but maybe that's too far away. Down here the NRMA (your racquet I guess?) has these service centres where they'll try and help you with mechanical and warranty stuff like this. If you could get someone independent like that to write you up something to give mmal that says no way is it the boot that might be a good start.

Hey a9x_hatch, had my steering rack replaced last year under warranty on my 2010 MN. But then mine tried locking up whilst in the tunnel in Brisbane. Not a good feeling! Hope you do better with them as it is not your fault the seals went.

The mackay one Is usually pretty good they replaced my whole rack and did some gear box work between the Christmas new years break a couple of years ago all under warranty no questions asked. And I have 3" lift and 33" tyres and my car has only ever been back to them for warranty work never a service.

Had no luck. Even had to take the car to filbys to have the synchros done. I won't be buying another car through them again no problems with mitsubishi just the stealer
