Gearbox warranty repairs

What were your warranty claims and recall information

Sounds like they are trying to mask the symptoms. If it were me, I would be into the dealer and politely demanding they pull the box and replace the synchro' as this is a common issue. If the box was supposed to have ATF or engine oil in it it would be in the specs listed in the handbook. If they won't fix it call MMA and get it logged, or maybe try another dealer.

Mixing oils, using ATF in a manual box requiring a heavy weight gear oil, what sort of mechanics are these?

I'd demand a new box if they'd farted about like that.

After swapping to Nulon's recommended oil for the drive train at the first service, I would treat the factory oil as a break in oil and toss it out at 5k if/when I ever upgraded to a new unit. The difference is like cheese and chalk.

Well. Ive had two boxes repaired under warranty in as many weeks.

The first experience was a glx that went from normal to not going from 4th to 3rd under any conditions, not idea when 4000ks from home. The dealership service manager was a bit of a tool and wasn't very interested, but it was clearly stuffed and they fixed it, it only took a week and communication was vey average.

The second was a glxr that was intermittently not going from 2nd to 3rd smoothly but would go in on second attempt. The Service manager at Melville Mitsi in Perth was a legend, turned it around in a day and rang to suggest replacing the clutch while the box was out only had to pay for the clutch parts (it did need doing).

Sounds like I've had a better experience than most, mind you ill avoid going back to the first dealership i went to, wasn't impressed with them.

mates got a 2011 glxr 5speed, gearbox has just dropped 3rd at 115 000km, has been serviced with log books, just not at a dealer whats the likely hood of a dealer replacing the damaged parts under warranty

Shouldn't matter where it's been serviced, provided it was done on time and with the right oils etc. the gearbox thing is a known issue (as this thread shows) so it shouldn't be too hard to get it sorted.

Anyone have any luck with getting the gearbox repaired under the 10yr drive train warranty? Mines an 08 model, always serviced by a mitsi dealer. We are currently on the road for a year and recently 5th gear has become very noisy, 4th is quiet and 3rd has a little noise. The good news is today first gear is jumping out when taking off:(. Heading to Townsville tomorrow so hopefully can get it looked at. Any others have the same issue?

Kev,

If you're the original owner and under the kilometeres for the 10 year warranty you should be alright. Sounds like it will need a rebuild like mine did recently. I didn't qualify for the warranty unfortunately.

Well got an update and the gearbox is shot, big time :o they will either replace the box with a new one or maybe a complete overhaul but either way requires parts to come from Japan with a 4 to 6 week delivery time  Worst part is we are halfway our tour of Oz, might be in Townsville for a while

An overhaul shouldn't take that long. They would most likely farm the job off to a gear box specialist anyway. A gearbox specialist was able to do mine in two days although took a month to book in due to being busy. They said the ML gearbox was the same as some older Toyota box although not sure which one. They said they do dealer warranty jobs all the time.

Good luck with the new box argument. Mine has been replaced 3 times and each one was as crap as the other. Last box lasted till 65,000 before the syncro went again, which was conveniently 5,000km out of warranty. I ended up sending it to a gearbox and diff mob and getting them to do it properly.

Speaking to a mate of mine big gibbo who was head mechanic for nissan everytime they repair something under warranty im led to beleive that it then qualifies for new warranty from the time of repairs ie 5 yr 130k so as far as im concerned mate they can keep fixing it the reason being they were quick to take my 42 k so I expect the same from mitsi and if it keeps clocking more kays to the dealers then I will be kicking up a stink and insist they buy it back or replace the ute with one that can be called of merchantable quality and to the mitsi member that watches this forum be warned we are tiring of the poor responses to blatant warranty claims and I for one will escalate this if a poor response received on my current issue.

Mits warrant their repairs for 20,000. Unfortunately there is no warranty on warranty work. If you are in the 5 year, 130,00km you are sweet. After that you are pretty much on your own.

My MN late 14 suddenly did not like going into 3rd at all. Heavy and loud crunching - sounded like the gearbox was about be thrown out from underneath me. Some sounds while reversing as well. Had no prior sign of anything happening.

edit. The worst part is its my work vehicle and they won't supply a replacement vehicle. Second time in a year will have had it for a week due to warranty crap.

Third gear is totally shot, 3 chunks totally gone, reverse has some small fragments gone as well. Waiting on approval for a new box... apparently nothing to do with the hub hotfix.

Service Manager called today. MMAL are getting an independent assessor as they are not happy to approve warranty. They are saying the way the reverse teeth are stripped that the box was put into reverse when going forward. 3rd gear they cant explain.
They are also very interested in the mods that are installed.

This is turning into a joke now. 2 weeks they have had it and still nothing. Who do I have to prod to get some action. This is my work car - which I have made it abundantly clear.

Its just a gearbox... Just pay them to rebuild it and chase up warranty later... No way could I go without my work car for that long. Hmmm maybe they know you're a rabbit. :?

I wouldn't be rattling the cage to much. You did leave your chip on after all.
If they wanted to (and they still may) they could refuse warranty on the gearbox because of the chip and then you'd have to prove it wasn't the chip. That could be difficult itself as the drive train was designed for X amount of power not the amount of power the chip produces.

Actually I think it's up to MMAL to prove if it was or wasn't caused by a performance chip.. But yeah easier not to go down that road... Surely he didn't leave the chip on it?
