Related but as an aside. BMW's AMG arm are saying that they will probably no longer offer manuals as the gearboxes , in their opinion, can't reliably handle big power demands. Torque converter is they way to go. They looked at manual US gearboxes that were built for the load but found them very poor when changing gears. I found their statements interesting.

Planetary gear sets, as found in autos are a much better design compared to the regular box, where gears are under high stress. The cogs and the shafts they run on are constantly being pushed apart, this requiring a pretty solid housing.
