Lots of mods were left on.
So if it gets to they won't cover, should I take it to a professional. It won't be a repair it's a replacement. It looks like shrapnel from reverse went into 3rd.

No one drives around redlining in reverse or changing from moving forwards to backwards without stopping.
They cannot give an explanation of the failure on 3rd or reverse gear.

What state are you in?

360 gearboxes and diffs in Melbourne http://360gearboxesdiffs.com.au/
do an improved gearbox for the ml so I dare say they do one for the mn too.
I'm not exactly sure what improvements they do but it's strengthened for towing.
It's also about 3k.
When I spoke to them about mine the convo went like this.
360. What's wrong with your gearbox? 3rd gear or is it jumping out of first?
Me. 3rd gear
360. So you tow
Me. yep
So it's obviously a weakness in the gearbox and a common problem.
Might pay to speak to them if Mitsubishi don't cover it.
This was my 3rd gear. Click to view larger picture

So would it be safe to say that this vehicle is unsuitable to tow a 2.5T trailer daily for work purposes?

I've busted two gear boxes in 220k. Took second and third out on cluster. I accept it with abuse mine gets.
To answer your question, I think anything over two tons will certainly shorten its life with urban running. Reversing trailers up hill at job sites etc is real tough on them.

Stick it to them, their always trying it on, just got to call their bluff. If you become such a persistent PIA they usually give in so they can just continue on to fobb other people off!

quote from engineer's report
"
Only one gear set of the gear sets in the gear box had actually displaced gear teeth. That gear set was the third gear ratio, a constant mesh gear set with teeth displaced from the second motion shaft gear and third motion shaft gear. There were bruises and part chipped teeth also. Those other fractures by the location, shapes and grain structures indicated they were caused by large solid metal pieces between the teeth. The force broke out sections of the teeth. The front 1st motion shaft bearing fractured at the circlip groove due to the distortion of the 1st to 3rd shafts. The distortion was why a portion of the forward section of the bearing circlip groove area remained. That metal when introduced to the roller races caused the bearing to seize in places. "

Not covering box due to report. I have sent the report to a gearbox specialist and will see what he thinks. The report is in PDF. I will try and get some of the photos from it. I

I should not have left mods on when I took it in but the gearbox shat itself on the way to the service.

I still have a few avenues of attack.

CONCLUSION: On the evidence available from the inanimate parts, it is my firm opinion that there was no manufacturing or material defect causing the failure. The gear teeth that displaced from the gear hubs by fracture were loaded beyond the design limits of the gears by external shock forces. Other fractures and failures were as a consequence of the gear teeth overload and displacement. The owner may indirectly carry some responsibility for this gear set failure due to the modifications installed on the vehicle. Due to the excess load applied the drivers carry the responsibility for this particular gear box failure.

Lesson learnt, do not take your vehicle in with major mods, and major failures :? :?
:? Honestly, was it that hard :?

Well I had 2 specialist mobs look at the damage. Both have said it was definitely my fault. And I doubt the hardened gearbox will help. With the boost I was running I was told race spec >$25K was what was needed.

So I have ordered a new gearbox and the exceedy clutch at the same time. Will probably have to drop down my tyre size, and wind down my chip and boost to gey settings.

What tyre size and power are you running?

I have a MY15 GLX manual with a re tune and 265/75/16 tyres and I have been worrying about my box so I am changing my diff gears from the 3.917 to the 4.11's to help reduce the load and make the diffs take some extra load.

I pretty sure I am running 33's 285/70/17 or something like that.

I was running alot of power but have cut it right back.

I thought the gears were just for offroading and makes no different to on road use?

Diff gears work all the time. Your thinking of transfer case gears.

Howi much power is a lot?
