ml overheating

Postby luke90 on Mon Nov 16, 2015 8:15 am

hey guys new to the forum

I have got a 2007 ml triton and it over heats. when it's just sitting there idling or if I'm driving around newy it's fine but when I get into the highway sometimes I'll get 50k down the road and it will go right up. the coolant boils into the overflow and pours out there. when I turn the engine off I usually hear the Copland boil for 5-10 seconds.
Ive had the radiator flushed and checked and everything was good there, have a genuine thermostat in and a 1.3 bar radiator cap with a 50/50 mix of Coolant.
hoping someone has had the same problem and can help

The first thing I'd be changing is the thermostat.
Have you had it tested for exhaust gases in the coolant.....as in head gasket?

changed the thermostat, went non genuine and then genuine. when the radiator was put in the tested for exhaust gases and said everything looked fine.

Why are you running a 50/50 mix and high pressure cap on an ML?

there has been alot of problems with the ml, one of the recommendations for a fix was that so i gave it ago, figured it was least expensive one to try

What about the fan clutch......has that been tested?
To test it you need two people.......
One holds the fan and the other starts the car. :?
Hold the fan while the other person starts the car.
When holding the fan it should feel like it want to pull out of your hand when it's running.......if not its stuffed.

Are you sure you aren't confusing the MN problems with your ML.

I can't remember reading about many ML over heating issues. (That may be because I have an MN and just didn't read those threads)

Sometimes the radiator flush even with a chemical clean will have no effect on the ability of the radiator to do its job. If changing the thermostat make sure it has a jiggle valve or a 3mm hole and mount that at the top so you don't get an air lock. Leave your heater on during drain and refill to make sure you get rid of all the old coolant and air, bring the car up to temp and cool down a few times. Test your old and new thermostats in a pot of hot water they should open at 76c degrees Celsius before installing. Another way to test the fan clutch is with a roll of newspaper rather than hold it with your hand, also when cold and the engine not running it should spin no more than one third of a turn when you give it a spin. Get a new radiator cap and make sure it has a return valve. There should be 3 gaskets in the cap, one to seal the top of the filler, one to seal the lower seat, one small centre seal to allow it to open and draw the coolant back to the radiator from the expansion tank when the engine cools. Make sure the line from the filler cap to the expansion tank is not blocked. When you next drop your oil filter there is a recessed hex plug (or set screw) right next to the filter. You can find a thread on that and a photo somewhere on this forum. Open that and clean it out with a flat blade screwdriver as it is a low point in the coolant system and can collect a lot of gunk and is part of the oil cooler system. (I couldn't access mine with the filter still on). I agree that a 1.1 cap and 30% coolant mix is the correct mix for an ML. My understanding is that the 1.3 cap and 50% mix increases temp and pressure and reduces thermal conductivity to induce failure in the MN's with the faulty blocks.

thanks mate, the radiator got put in the day before i left for work a few weeks ago, the cooling system should have been drained and refilled right as long as they did their job correctly. the heater was on hot when i picked it up so i assumed it was done correctly.
ill have to check the spin on the fan on friday and will inspect the radiator cap when i get back aswell, i should be able to get one with 3 gaskets just from supercheap right?
ill have a look at the filter aswell on friday, will put a new one on while im at it.

I might have mistakenly read the thread when i changed it to a 1.3 cap and 50% mix. ill sus that one out on friday and talk to the guy who done the radiator and find out what mix he used.

Fan clutch or water pump

With those kms I'd be doing both regardless as a precautionary measure.
Chances are its one of those anyway and there are aftermarket manufacturers of both.
Quite easy to do yourself too.
