Rear spring 'U' Bolt recall (merged threads)

Postby WoodGnome on Wed Feb 18, 2009 2:29 pm

I received a Recall Letter concerning the Rear suspension spring 'U' Bolt.

Letter states that there is a possibility of the Rear suspension spring 'U" bolt developing cracks in service that could lead to them breaking.

Has any one heard or had this problem as yet?

Yep already had the recall letter (Here in NZ) and the ute's been in for the exchange. Apparently, so i was told these U Bolts are prone to rusting and then cracking so it is a complete recall on a safety point.
The letter came from Mitsubishi NZ directly.

Just rang my dealer and they haven't heard anything about it here in Aus.

Spoke to the foreman he checked their web site and nothing on the rear springs except the squeaking issue.

They have replaced the 'U' bolts. Look like it made from Stainless Steel now.

Finally done the Mod for the squeaking springs, after the second attempt to fix it.

Can confirm that this recall applies in Australia too. Some dealerships have had advanced warning emails as the Government websites may have this information before the letters arrive for Triton owners.

Recall notice on Ubolt under axle

Postby ArrowsWA on Wed Mar 25, 2009 2:18 pm

Wondering who else got this recall notice, got mine in todays mail, basically found some cracks in the bend that create a risk of shearing if corrosion gets into them, notice advises cause and effect may effect insurance and steering stability issues???? or as they put it failure of the u-bolt, may cause miss-alignment of the rear axle and difficulty maintaining directional control of vehicle mmm yep reckon it could eh

I have the letter right here in front of me, it reads the following problem,

"It has been established that micro-cracks may have been introduced in the bent portion of the rear axle U-bolt during the manufacturing process.
When vehicles fitted with the affected bolts are operated in a high corrosion environment the corrosion developed within these cracks may result in the failure of the U-bolt. This can result in misalignment of the rear axle causing difficulty in maintaining directional control of the vehicle."

Only applies to Tritons manufactured between December 2006 and June 2007 apparently..

Cheers, Shane.
