mn squeeky steering

Postby obrienn1 on Fri Aug 16, 2013 10:19 pm

Hi all. Just picked up my 3 month old MN after having "squeeky steering" fixed under warranty. The foreman said its a common problem due to lack of glue being placed in steering colum in factory. Well the slight sqweek is still there and going back on monday again. Is most prominent when turning wheel to full lock. Also the car seems louder now when driving and i can hear the turbo spool more noticable. I've had a look under near the brake peddals and can see the steering arm and boot but no "sound deadining material". I can only guess that a panel hasn't been replaced.

So it's not the loose nut behind the wheel. Just a lack of glue.

I had the glue hotfix but found the squeak in my steering was being caused by the rubber boot near the pedals rubbing on the steering column. I put some rubber grease inside and no more squeaks.

Afternoon all. I'm not sure if the issue I have is this or not. Steering feels fine over bumps, no clunking etc. But on turning the wheel it gets stuck and requires a bit more of a push to get it past a certain point. Happens when turning left or right but strangely enoungh only on bigger sweeping bends were little steering is required. 90 degree turns in local streets are all good most of the time but jump on the highway and turn the wheel and its like the steering column is fouling on something. Checked and it seems all clear and the power steering fluid is full. Are these symptoms others have experienced?

Steering sorted itself out before I could get it to the mechanic. They checked over everything and nothing is loose or faulty. They did mention that salt water can mess with the knuckles on the column but they generally free up after a few days. Makes sense as I had a salty adventure around some trees on the beach the night before the issues occured. Back to its best though so happy bout that, will just keep it in mind as something to check come servicing.

mn 2013 steering click

Postby joelholmes1234 on Thu Feb 27, 2014 6:17 pm

Hey guys,
I seem to have developed a clicking that I can feel when steering seemms to be worse when stopped and turning. I have been reading about the steering rack replacement hotfix, does anyone know if this is still an issue with the 2013 mn? It was from a few years ago surely its been fixed from stock in the 2013? Any ideas. It has the ultimate 2in lift also.

Same problem. Been to the dealer 3 times now. Hadn't done it for 2 months until last week when it started again. They tried the glue thing 3 times over, really going to rev it up them now....

Make sure the noise isn't coming from the grommet in the firewall where the steering shaft goes through. Although it's usually more of a groan when quickly turning the steering wheel.

Hit the grommet with some WD40 and see if it shuts up.

The clicking and the rattle are two separate issues.

Mine has the clicking and it started only a few weeks after I bought it (had it a year now). I gave up on letting them try and fix it because the dealer I was using had/has no idea.

I reckon mine is to do with the clocking mechanism.......but what would I know

Good luck with it and let us know if you get a satisfactory outcome or resolution.

My steering is playing up again. Its bloody heavy when the cars cold, loosens up a bit once shes warm but isnt returning to centre anymore. Well no where near as quickly as it should.

Any idea what the problem could be? Power steering pump on the way out? Suspension/steering components? Trye pressure is fine and I have not had any knocks or decent hits at the front.

A bell's ringing somewhere, in the deep dark recesses of my poor old increasingly challenged grey cells about someone who had similar heavy steering issues and it turned out to be related to small -bits- of rubber found floating around inside the bowels of their pump, 'from memory'.... :D
Maybe try using the Forum's 'Search' function with search-words along those lines.... ;)

Hi,
Given the new model 2016 Triton boasts better steering ratio ie less turns of the wheel from lock to lock, I think they say 3.8 turns, would it be possible to replace the one in my current 2013 model with one of these newer ones to improve the steering in my vehicle?
Thanks

That's a steering rack replacement gunny, column stays the same, but it's definitely an interesting idea, I'd be tempted to fit an MQ rack in my MN if was enough of an improvement over what I have now with the stock steering.

Think of all the exercise you'll miss with an mq rack.

Mq rack, telescopic steering column and six speed gearbox would be good retro to any ml or mn.

I thought I'd read that the new lux has electric assisted steering. I'm not really keen on the assistance
being applied via the steering column on larger vehicles.

The steering column on my MY11 MN has rattled like a bastard for ever, when I ran crying in to the dealers about it they simply said "It's not the rack, it's in the column, it's never going to do any harm, put up with it" and I do.
