New steering column!

Postby boycee on Mon Jun 15, 2009 4:05 pm

Had the car in at the stealers today for them to check out a knock in the front end. (second time round). They had the car all day and when I went to pick it up they told me they have ordered a new steering column for it. So back it goes again when they get it in. Seems pretty excessive to me, anyone else had this problem :?:

Yes a few have had theirs replaced thru warranty.

Some of the earlier model tritons were fitted with bearings that got flogged out quickly. Rick is one i know of that has had this done.

Im convinced that mine has a knock when i go over speed bumps and kerbs but i mentioned it when it went in for service 2 weeks ago and they said they did not find anything mechanicaly wrong with it. (meaning they did not actually test drive it)

yep, had the steering column replaced due to the knock you speak of. It fixed the problem, and is still sweet 3000km later. Now if they could just stop the rear springs from squeaking!

Wish I had a dollar for each time I'd read this post. I'd be telling the boss (work) where to go.

Got the steering column done and when i drove out of the dealer i realised that they put the bloody steering wheel on at an angle. Took it back straight away and was fixed then and there. :D I asked the mechanic if this was a common problem with the triton and he reckons have changed nearly every car they have sold. Which begs the question why not build the bloody things properly from the get go.

Had my replaced on Tuesday.
Currently only 26K on the clock, started to rattle at 14K and progressively got worse. I hope the new one lasts longer.
You would think Mitsu have been making steering columns long enough to get it right.

get the mechanic to take it for a spin and go over some speed humps.
when stopped turn the wheel quickly right and left and see if you can feel the knock.

Mine was only knocking every now and then but they knew it was a problem as they have replaced most of the tritons they have sold.

Yeah mine has a knock in the front every now and again. the problem is making it do it to show someone in the service department. I thought it was from my 2 3/4 " lift but ist still there after i lowered the height so i am guessing it is the column too.
It's easier to get forgivness than permission.

Had mine checked as it was doing even when stopped, you could feel and hear it. They replaced a ball joint (only 50,000km ) which surprised them but fixed it. Still have a knock when stopping or taking off, so maybe my steering coloum has gone too.

Yep clunk throught the steering wheel, Mine did on any bumbs, driveways and when braking. All good & tight now, I was going to wait till the 30k service but I got sick of it and took it in. It is a common fault and all dealers would know about it.
Cheers

Ok, I took mine in and this has been happening since my 1500K service. I mentioned and of course they didn't notice anything. I took it in yesterday and again the mechanic could not find anything. I went for a drive with the mechanic who said he still could not feel anything. I told him to hang on as it was happening and he still couldn't feel anything. What do I need to tell these boofheads to get it sorted, I was just going to wait until it fell out. Both times it has been documented within their system....

looks like mine needs to go get another one.

sameold, when they put mine in the little mechanic decided to put the wheel on the angle so I took it back and he fixed it within 5 mins. :D Sounds like you need a wheel alignment too. But make sure you go to a 4x4 specialist as the normal wheel alignment guys dont have the right gear for the bigger cars.
