New tailshaft

Postby boycee on Thu Dec 17, 2009 10:14 am

Just took the tri into mitsi dealer to see what they could do about the shudder I am getting. They took it for a drive and had a look underneath.
When I went to pick the car up they told me they have ordered a new tailshaft. :o
there is a hotfix for this but I don't have the numbers yet.
The guy also said it was a characteristic of the car but we will replace it for you.

I was surprised that they are doing this as I have efs suspension. But it is a minimal lift so it doesn't affect warranty. 8-)

I wonder what they have changed, if anything, in this "new" tailshaft :?:

could it be going from a 2 piece tail shaft to a one piece??
My 09 ML has a one piece but the bloke a few doors down at work has a 2 piece

The trouble with that is the crossmember where the centre bearing mounts for the 2 piece shaft. Could get contact.

Asked our dealer if a replacement one piece would resolve my slight shudder issue and he reckons that even some new MN Manuals with lifts have shudder issues as well?? So he said it would most likely be a futile/expensive exercise.

Dealers are seeing lifted MN's already. Are there any lifted ones owned by people on here?

I'll let you know how I go with it first tex. ;)

As long as it gets fixed I don't care what they do. The place we got the suspension from are still working on a fix as I told them if this doesn't work it is all up to them. ;)

I spoke to Dobinson's yesterday about this. They confirmed that the MN's are now being shipped with two piece tailshafts again - in other words it is only late model ML's that had the one piece shaft fitted. They reckon they lifted an MN last week and after they fitted the caster plates there was no shudder at all. He reckons that the new tailshaft is slightly longer than the old one which may have eliminated this problem.

Got the new tailshaft installed this morning. No shudder woohoo. They replaced the whole tailshaft and centre bearing.

oh yeah.

This may sound stupid but the car actually drives a bit smoother, I suppose that is coz there is not as much resistance at the centre bearing etc. :? 8-)
