Clunk nosie in steering

Postby Ralph on Wed Feb 27, 2008 5:00 am

Anyone notice a clunk in the steering...Only happens occasionally in mine but is noticeable enough make me more than curious every time.

I have had a captain cook but nothing stands out as being problematic.

Yep I had it, apparently its a flogged out bearing in your steering column, take it to your dealer, they'll order a new steering column and replace it under warranty, thats what happened to mine..

Cheers, Shane.

I dont know mate, I bought this to there attention while thge car is still on the factory rubber and shocks, but given that there are a few getting about with this issue you should be able to get them to come to the party. I dont know if it is restricted to a particular year of car.

Mitsu SA has no idea about it... Is there a TSB? Magilla, mine is on 27000, and also on dealer fitted rubber. I jave also noticed it... Especially loading and unloading suspension over max travel apps. Noticed it also coming off the motorway and having a sharp slow and left turn.

I got told today it is done on a complaint basis . Complain and get it fixed I dont know if there is a hotline fix . It takes half a day by all accounts. Subi may have posted a hotline fix number in the tech section.

i have a question regarding the steering knock, if the problem is a flogged out bearing, if they replace the whole lot, isnt it goin to do the exact same thing in another 20000Kms??

Anyone have a clunk in the steering with the wheels straight ahead? Motor is off and then move the steering wheel backwards and forwards and a clunking noise comes from the left hand side near the steering rack.
I have had a new steering column fitted before and the dealer had it again all day today. They said it was the steering boot .
Got it home and it is still the same, any suggestions ?
cheers

Bill i think i have the same problem as you

Got back my Sportero today, took 2 and a half days to change the steering column. The knock when turning left is gone when driving. But if the engine is off and i rock the steering left and right i still hear a knock.. any ideas?

Mine has the knoock when stopping and starting. Grabbed the steering universals between the fire wall and steering box and it is loose. I think the uni's are stuffed. Getting that looked at on next service

Went in for the U bolt recall yesterday at Lander Mits Blacktown and thought I'd mention all the other little probs such as the steering knock, gas strut failed on hard cover, foam strips stuffed on hard cover causing paint wear and noisy rear leaves. Surprisingly by end of day had the recall done, a 'noise suppression kit' fitted, hard cover realligned, new steering column on order, new protective strips and gas strut on order all on warranty. And a free carwash to boot. I saw attached to the paperwork was about four different hotline fixes too but didnt get the numbers. Im pretty sure there was one for the steering knock, misaligned cover, gas strut and squeek.
