DI-D 07 ML Surging or hesitation issue

What were your warranty claims and recall information

Patto,

i have been watching your posts with interest as i have had some similiar issues in my Triton and have only had it for a couple of months.

two issues i have is very high fuel useage and (what i think but cant compare, except to demo unit many months ago) very low power particularly at low revs. towing my medium size boat i was getting 18l/100klm! AND i was lucky to get it over 100klm on the flat. DID auto. i wont go into more detail yet as i am commencing research and dont want to hijack.

my comment to you - before 'you go legal' which will cost you money anyway, is have you taken it to a diesel specialist?

i was advised West End at Wetherill Park was good but have not seen them yet. i have used Berrima Diesel before (another vehicle) and don't doubt their talents but they are a fair hike away and can be very pricey. both have in house Dyno's which i believe is the best way to troubleshoot with any accuracy.

if you can identify the problem then take it to mits with some form of report and get it done under warranty....that is the plan anyway.

Hey snowman -

Diesel specilist has looked at the car - and stright up he tells me there is a problem just by driving it. Put it on the dyno the lot but they cant pick the fault. Obviously he does not wqnt to start pulling things down as Mitsubishi have warned he is to diagnose only any touching of the car will result in warranty issue...

So far nothing has been found to date - he has asked mitsub for a trial a new map sensor out of a car on the show room but they wont give lend us one as its a $650 part.. in all his experience he has put it down to this being the problem.

patto,

good luck with it and thanks for the updates. i'm sure you will keep us informed of your progress and, hopefully, success in the near future.

i also appreciate your feedback regarding the 'driveability' in contrast to just a flat out power curve. mine doesn't surge so much as is just low on power. once above about 2700-3000rpm it goes well - but who buys a diesel to drive around at that RPM!! probably why my mileage is so bad as well as i have the boot in and RPM up just to get anywhere.

i'm arranging a dyno test with someone who has an identical drivetrain to do a direct comparison. failing that the fleet sales bloke that sold me the triton has a DID auto and tows his boat with it. he actually allowed me to tow my boat (in fact he insisted) with his demonstrator and it went well. so i might flick him the keys and say "go tow with this". i reckon if it as bad as i feel it is his face will tell me if i am right and he is the sort of bloke who would go down to the service dept and say "it's f*ucked - fix it" - that's the plan anyway!

seems they have some quality control issues at Mitsibishi though. :x :x :x

More like service department issues. They just don't seem to want to fix anything?

Hey snow man,

Mitsubishi today have said that there is nothing wrong at all with the engine everything is running sweet. fuel psi, turbo psi, airflow...everything is A++++++.

Some more breaking news today - is that this is now becoming a known problem with DID auto's only. The service manager spilled the beans today and advised that they are currently running tests on a few auto's in adelaide as they believe the elctronic gear box is playing the big part in the "bogging down and not going anywhere"...

More to come on thursday as the service manager over looking my car has a meeting with mitsubishi direct to overcome my problems and to have them sorted asap as it has dragged on long enough... I told him to tell them if its easier they can just give me a new truck manual this time (with Diff lock) swap all my gear over on it and we will call it even. It will be best for them as they are about to have to very secong hand tritons come this weekend if they dont get mine sorted.

very interesting to say the least. keep me posted and good luck. maybe i should go and register my issues sooner than later as it may fuel the fire against the suspect autos if that is the answer.

i must admit if i was ordering it again i would seriously consider the manual. but as i do plenty of sydney traffic the auto makes the left leg life much easier. thanks for the post.

Sounds like it might be right Patto, as the info i'm getting on the petrol tick is coming out of the Adelaide test facility too.
Apparently 3 petrol engines under test with the 'fix' and all good after 10,000 hrs.
I have no concrete proof that this isn't a bit of Chinese whispers though.

I have a auto diesal and it eas all good for about 45000 k. Then the fuel economy started to go bad. After reading about the carbon issue i nly thought that it may be the cause. I have checked the inlet manifold and there is a carbon buildup but enough to cause a problem i dont know.

After doing just over a thousand ks this weekend i noticed more trouble witht the care. there was the surge you guys have mentioned but was very noticably in 1st 2nd and 3rd gear in the lower rev range. Also didnt go below 12l/100 the whole trip. About 650km was on the highway. At times when driving it feels as if you have to really put the foot down to go anywhere. Im sure it wasnt like that when new.

Hope you can keep us informed about any news regarding this.

This surging is odd . I have just clicked over 83000kms and had a slight surge for the last few thousand kms not too bad but I can notice it. The fuel economy has started to drop to about 690 to 720 kms per tank. This is about 50kms less than I have been averaging . Last tank surging stopped and the fuel consumption has got better again 760+ for last tank. ??????????????????????????????

Same here - but I reckon there is a real difference in economy on the coast vs. inland (humidity, elevation?)

Mine is good for 600km no matter where it goes...i fill at 600 for around 63 ltrs and being a 75ltr tank she would be good for another 100 odd km but running a tank that low you are only going to pick up all the sh!t that sits at the bottom of the tank.

Shite fellas I get 520+km with my V6. I would expect 100k's or more better from the oiler.

i have DID auto and have NEVER got better than 12.5l/100. now around 14-15l/100 (4500klms on clock). This is adjusted for tyre size (5% added to trip computer distance for tyres) and based on refilling. i have not even looked at the screen readout since about day 3.

filled yesterday and got (431klms x 1.05 =) 452.5klms for 64.5 litres so that is about 15.1 litres / 100 klms (?)

towing my moderately sized boat (1300kg) it went to 18l/100!!!

very, very dissapointed and Mits did not want to know until 15k service. as it is getting worse i think i am going to have to push this hard. having oversize tyres does not help when going to the dealer.....but i have heard enough stories from others with similiar tyres and no issues with mileage.

Is this becoming a DID AUTO problem????????????????????????

i dont suffer from surging yet although it seems to fall in a hole between first and second and i think suffers badly from no power at low RPM.

also at night when working it hard the headlights from cars behind show up lots of smoke particulates but it is not obvious in the daytime. not sure if others see this at night?

I'm getting the cold surge too. Even had it bunny hopping in the car park at work after nightshift. What is different in the Triton to the Paj DID? Mines a 2008 with superselect 11000km on the clock. The other annoying thing is when you back off it will smooth coast for a bit then suddenly hammer into engine braking with a fairly severe clunk as the drive train takes up slack. Intending to get it looked into at the 15000 service.

agreed buzzy - in fact the worse it gets the more chance i have of getting it fixed. i am convinced it is fixable and when it is done i will be wrapped as i love the rest of the car.

so in a perverse sort of way i am happy... :? :?
