Broken Clutch Pedal Spring

Postby Snooozy on Wed Dec 22, 2010 9:34 pm

Couple of weeks ago, went to get into Tri & noticed a piece of dark heavy wire on floor.

Closer inspection it looked very much like a piece of broken spring.

Grabbed a torch & had a look around pedal arm area  1/2 of the clutch pedal return spring is missing.
Mystery solved.

It is being replaced after Christmas under warranty. Was obviously poor quality spring steel to break like it did.

ML 3.2, 2009 model. 19k on clock.

I have done a search & cannot find anyone else with similar problem.
Might pay to keep an eye on it if you have similar model. I don't know if it was a one-off or a bad batch.

Raising an old thread, but i did a search and found it. The spring on my clutch did exactly the same thing this afternoon, broke on the right hand side. I take it past the stealers in the morning and let them have a look at it, hope the spring doesn't come out or break the other side or it might become a drama.

I had it fixed under warranty without any problems. :)

I phoned the dealer & explained what had happened & told them to order the spring & phone me when they had it in stock. (I wasn't going to waste my time driving 1/2 hour each way for them to tell me it was broken & they needed to order a new one)

I drove around with one side broken for a couple of weeks till I could arrange a time to suit me for them to replace it. Didn't have any issues after that.

I'm guessing this may start showing up a bit more often. At least on here we have a bit of an idea how often this is happening.

Thanks Snoozy,
I drive right past the stealer everyday so i will drop in there in the morning and tell them to get the parts ordered. I hope the other side doesn't fail or pop out in the mean time.

Not sure if its broken yet, but will have to have a look at mine tonight.

half way to work this morning my clutch wouldn't depress more then half way. Luckily, half way is just enough to disengage, but not allow me to shift gears at idle.

So for the rest of the trip to town, if i was forced to stop, i had to hold the clutch in and ride to a stop, turn the car off, pick second gear and when i had the green light, clutch in and start the car in 2nd and i was moving. From there is was rev hard and flat shift 3rd and 4th so i could at least do 80-100km\h.

Was a pain in the arse, but at least i was moving. Rolled it into the dealers driveway and asked them to have a look. Guy jumped in and stomped on the clutch peddal a few times until BANG! it hit the floor. He said the spring probably just got wound up, but to keep an eye on it and if it happens again, to bring it back in.

So far, so good.

ok
i got a phone call from the missus tday at work she said when the clutch pedal was pushed in she felt a clunk
so when i got home i checked on the floor was half a broken clutch return spring so i phoned the dealers
and they have booked it in for next week the clutch works well enough so i suppose its not life threatening
just a pain to pull all this apart for a silly 50cent spring so far its only snoozy, dan and now me
warranty is a wonderful thing :)

Warranty aye... I never followed up on mine after the dealer freed the clutch. The spring fell on the floor about a week later, but the clutch seemed fine, but maybe i should ask for a new one.

Not sure if this is the same problem but the other day I started the car, eased into 1st gear, started to move and then as I went to 2nd I felt the clutch pedal collapse down to the floor and seemingly disappear. I pulled over quickly, had a look outside and there were no leaked fluids. I looked down and the clutch pedal was hard to the floor, without my foot on it. From the neutral position I could not change into any gear with the stick, despite the pedal being fully depressed. Eventually I manually pulled the clutch back up to normal position with my hand. Luckily full function seemed to return and I was able to drive away and things seem relatively normal again (relatively because I always had a dodgy gear box)

Does anyone have any idea what this is?

gidday micv

my problem was the spring at the top of the clutch pedal,if you get your head down you can see the springt hat returns the pedal up to its resting place ,clutch is still functional but feels very weak and easy to depress.
yours sounds like a different problem mate sorry i cant help you :|

My old mans rodeo has been doing the same thing for a while pretty sure he said he needs. New slave cylinder ...seals could be dodgy or something ...

Almost sounds like it came off the piston for the cylinder somehow and then got back on again. Not sure if that is even possible - luckily I have an auto so my cluelessness on manuals can't hurt me.

as mad said, sound like a different problem to what happened to me. was a very soft feeling with not much clutch rebound.
I also had the snap sound as the spring broke.

Thanks for the supportive comments guys. There's no way i can get my head under there without be a contortionist. I've since determined that the clutch fluid was below low so I've topped it up. There was also excessive travel compared with the spec in the manual. Hopefully fluid was all it needed. Thanks again.

Hi all, I found the cultch fluid kept going down and and found it leaking out of the boot of the slave cyclinder. Can anyone please confirm whether that is fixable under warranty?
Can anyone please confirm whether it would be a problem if I kept driving around on it for a few weeks if I just kept topping it up in the mean time?

Could any body please identify this broken spring i found in the footwell on the drivers side floor. I thought it might have something to do with the pedals but they all feel fine. Thanks for any help in advance.
