Not entirely sure on the filter,

But generally a mould/sludge build up on the evaporator coil would cause it to smell first up then dissipate with use (throughout the day), once the coil gets wet with condensation it will usually start to clear the smell (untill it sits for a while and dries out again). If the smell was in the filter it would be there all the time ;)

There was an optional pollen filter, but upstream so wouldn't create any smell, I think.

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

nope no pollen filter fitted as standard, Prob just mould build up on the Evaporator as Fridgie said.

A few different ways to go about it, there are some treatments out there that can kill the mould and make it smell nice again, or just mask the smell with a Deodoriser.

Running the a/c on recirculate all the time can make it smell a bit manky.

Pollen filters are available for tritons.
The part number is MZ341012EX.
Easy enough to install just have to be careful of the airbag wire.

No filter on the MN GLX :( I dropped the glovebox and the plastic gard behind it and poked a dentist mirrior
in there and could only see the blower fan (dirty as) Could be a prick of a job to service the aircon if
it ever breaks down  the whole dash would have to come out.

There isn't one installed from the factory. The plastic has to be cut to install the filter.
The part number I provided is for all ml/mn models.

Curious if i could fit an aftermarket filter i cut the front plastic...thingy
and had a look

and from the pic you can see the rail the filter would slide on....bloody dusty in there

So a quick mesure up 215mm W and 215 l x 35mm H and i ended up finding a ryco A1527 filter that
fitted nice and tight inside...allthough the filter fits better upside down (the way it's facing
now) in the end it's a filter where there was no filter before...i then glued the plastic cutout's
back in and works no prob, the proper filter that qwertyboy03 mentioned would prolly fit better but this one sealed up pretty good & for 28 bucks what the hell i had nothing else to do ;)

This may not be everyone's cup of tea but it works & it's interchangeable & it's keeping the dust out
of the system so it's gotta be a good thing ;)

Prolly a little bit down on airflow when the vent is open and no fan going
but i cant notice any lower performance when the aircon is running, & it works fine
on recirculate or with the vent open ;) my main concern was to seal off everything just before
the blower to keep the dust out of the system....ill have another look at the next service in about 15k see
how much crap is in their & throw some pics up.

Just a little update.... i rang my stealer and spoke to
the scare parts mob and was quoted 92.00 bucks for the filter  ouch!! ...not model specific.
But he reckons it is a pollen filter so dunno if that make's it any better ;)

Sometime's I hate having to much time off work....means i have to tinker with my buggy
So i went and bought the rite filter for the aircon, comes as a kit 2 screws a service
sticker & (holy crap) instructions  :o
There's no need to keep the plastic cut out's anymore as ya can see the plastic lugs
on the corners of the filter that screw into the filter frame completely sealing it off ;)

This is the ryco filter i put in :o only after 1500k's damn it was doing it's job well
i keep my vent closed 95% of the time....now i have a spare.

Here's the proper filter fitted up 8-)

Thanks for this write up Sky Miner, I fitted the Ryco today from Repco for around $24(they said on 1/2 price special or clearance).
It doesn't take long to drop the glove box and remove the liner from behind.
a Quick cut with a stanley knife and it slides in. :D

Squeeze the sides in or move it to the sides until the plastic pin bits drop out of the slots. Then it will hinge right down to the floor.

Did some research on the filters and found this to share.
Mitsu genuine filter kit..........................MZ341012EX (as mentioned by qwertyboy03).
Mitsu genuine replacement filter.........MR398288 (probably missing service sticker and self tappers).
Ryco aftermarket filter..........................RCA206C (sca wanted $40 odd from memory).
Tyc aftermarket filter.............................800083C ( ebay $17 with $10 shipping). :D
Tyc came with fitting instructions, no screws
Also gave the blower a hit with the air gun and got covered in dust, the amount of crap that came out of the vents and blower was   :o . Amazing no filter is fitted from factory.
Time to fit was 20min and easy as.

This was where my search started. (which was interesting reading)
http://www.google.com.au/url?q=http://w ... pNJk_zwc-A
Which also list this
Mitsubishi Genuine Evaporator Cleaner........... MZ100950EX.
Hopes this helps some with their tritons

reading the instruction on the Pic.
mentions that it is the replacement filter part number MR398288- like you mention it is cheaper due to missing the sticker and self tappers....?

great research though- thanks.

looks for a ebay listing now

looks like this filter fits a whole heap of mitsubishi vehicles "MITSUBISHI LANCER (2002-07) OUTLANDER (2003-06)" ;)

Also - these pollen filters can last for years - just give a blow job with the compressed air every so often.
