ML 60K service, valves get done?

Postby Rienoh on Tue Sep 18, 2012 6:06 pm

Hi Guys,

Just got my 09 ML Diesel back from the 60K service, cost me $740.

I enquired why the valves were not on the service item list whilst booking it in (as the book says they should be done at 30 and 60 ) and he has a look and agrees. Anyway I pick it up and again there is no mention of valves being touched. I did request it too!!!

My question is should they have been done by now? The 30k service had no mention of them being touched either.

Thanks guys

Short answer is yes.

If you have warranty issues down the line and mitsi find that the fault has occured because of a valve problem you will have no leg to stand on. And if this wasn't done at the 30k service your basicly screwed already

I would have thought that if you get it serviced by the dealer then that covers you for the warranty. What would I or any average joe blow know about whether it needed or had the valve clearances checked.

Mine's done 140,000 and has never had the valve clearance checked. They have asked me if I want them done a couple of times and I always say you people are the experts, if it needs doing do it!

On a different note, I've just driven from Forbes to Glen Iris in Melbourne and averaged 7.9 litres/100ks. Average speed for the entire trip was 90kph.

I understand that the Mitsi mechs tend to decide whether the valves need adjusting by listening to the engine as part of the higher km service. As it appears to be "optional" from a dealer's point of view, I could almost bet money that the valves don't get done on Fridays.

At the 30k service the mech advised that they'd probably need doing at 45k.

At 45k still suggested that didn't need touching.

Finally requested they be checked at 95k and adjusted - mech found two inlets only slightly out.

I suggested that I'd be right for another 80k and he agreed.

Conclusion - probably worth a sticky and adjust as factory follow up once you have a few kms up.

The 3.2 seems a pretty "lazy" engine and if you don't thrash it and keep your lubes clean then physically lifting the rocker cover off to check valves every 30k probably exposes more risks to the beast.
Don't let the b'strds get you down!!

Simple answer, Are they Supposed to be done.... YES,

For $740 they basically replaced your oil and filter and Fuel Filter, Bit of a RIP OFF if you ask me.
