Cleaning gunked up MAP sensor....

Postby AussieAnth on Wed Jan 08, 2014 11:13 am

EDIT: Note, I'm talking about the MAP sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure)
not the MAF sensor (Mass Air Flow)

Previously had an 08 BT-50 and I mostly posted on the 4wdaction forums. There's a massive thread or 2 about using MAF sensor cleaner on gunked up MAP sensors, and the very noticeable benefits of keeping it clean. Loads of horrible pictures of people's MAP sensors looking like they'd been dipped in tar. I pulled mine out & was surprised how bad mine was. Several squirts of CRC MAF sensor cleaner, and it re-vitalised the BT. Couldnt believe how much difference it made to smoothness & restored power, and probably a bit of economy.

As a new MN owner, with catch can and EGR block, I shouldnt have to do this much. But there must be loads of people with 50k + on the clock who should probably do this every once in a while. Did some searching but couldn't find much info on it here.

Do Triton owners not bother? Do the ML & MN not suffer the same fate as the BT/Ranger?

If interested, page 2 & 3 of this forum thread cover the basics including some good before and after photos of MAP cleaning.

Might be something worth discussing.

Yeah did notice a "Cleaning the MAF" link in the forum directory, but had a flick through the 4 pages, and they dont seem to touch on it much. MAF only ever gets a bit of fine dust on it, where as the MAP is exposed to cabon gunk and is completely blocked. 2 very different sensors in different places doing different jobs. And since the MAP is almost useless when coated in gunk, I was keen to know if its something most people do.

In my (limited) experience with my BT-50, it was something I did every 3 months, and it really helped. There just doesnt seem to be much discussion of it on the Triton forum.

Our map sensor is located on the end of a hose with a nipple attachment so nigh on impossible to clean.

Most of he gunk ends up blocking the hose anyway.

So if you did want to clean it, you'd have to remove the hose and sensor, and clean the 2 separately?

Anyone actually done this?

Ya can take the hose off and clean, and can also remove the MAP sensor easily enough, however not sure how effective cleaning the map sensor would be. Would need a stick wand on the cleaner, however there's nowhere for the stuff to go unless u do it upside down.

That CRC MAF cleaner is incredible stuff. It literally vaporizes the gunk, with maybe a few dirty drops if you really hit it hard. Usually 3 or 4 sprays and the MAP on a BT-50 would be clean as a whilstle.
As for any hoses, I guess you'd flush them with degreaser for starters, then give a few good squirts of the CRC cleaner down there until you're satisfied.

I'll have to look into the MAP sensor as on a BT-50 it bolted straight into the manifold on the top left side of the engine.
