sql update costs?

Postby s13tsilvia on Wed Jan 22, 2014 10:58 am

Just rang my local mitsubishi for a price on just doing an sql update as it hasnt been to a dealer for around 2-3 years, they wanted $123 bucks and the car for an hour... this seems a bit high as all they are doing is uploading some new sql parameters etc. it really should be a 10 minute job to plug in, run sql and drive out.

any thoughts?

If it hasn't been to a dealer in that long you might find there's an ECU update available as well. Might be worth thinking about that in advance in terms of whether you want it or not so that you're clear with them as to what they're doing.

What does an SQL upgrade achieve ?
I have no idea the history of my triton and ECU updates or anything of that nature.

are they worthwhile to get done ?

Free. These engines do their own SQL periodically.

The SQL recalibrates the small squirt (for lack of better term) of diesel that is injected prior to the main injection to start the combustion in the cylinder, the reason for the small injection is to reduce 'diesel knock'.

I always find my car is quieter and smoother after the SQL is done, should be done every 15000

My car has developed a loud rattle/clatter ( diesel knock? ) under light load over the last 6mth ( MN bought new in 2010 ) , most noticable at a constant throttle at 100kmhr on a flat hwy. If I put my foot down, go up a hill or load up the motor it goes away ?

I've had the dealer do SQL the last 2 services with nil effect, have also tried a few different brand injecter cleaner also. I have just been given the mitsu bottle of injector cleaner to try.

anyone else had this ? or have an opinion on something else to look at ?

I too get the noise your describing Tallman,

i find using a different brand of fuel every now and then or changing my boost setting a PSI or two fixes the issue for a few months,

Basically I believe these small changes just changes forces the ECU's paramters to change slightly resulting in the vehicle performing its own SQL as suggested by Longranger

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything important, it's too late to stop reading it.
