drilling hole in bash plates for oil change

Postby furious on Sat May 12, 2018 11:35 am

hi, just wondering if it would be ok to drill a hole in the bash plates (3mm stainless) to make the oil changes easier?

Wouldn't this be a better idea?

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

Drilling stainless will be fun.

Maybe a plasma or laser job?

How many hole saws do you think you'll wear out getting through 3mm of stainless?

the bash plate won't fit in the drill press but the lowest setting on the 18volt drill is lowish, plenty of lube and I was told a pain in the ass tip of marking out the hole and predrilling several pilot holes around the circumference of the hole. it apparently reduces the amount of metal you are cutting don't know if it would work.

You could cut a square hole with the thin grinder discs instead of drilling a round one.

I've drilled mine. Worked out really well. Boos bash plates 3 mm mild steel. I already had a decent 30mm carbide piece in my shed. In saying that you could probably easily pilot hole and then use a step up drill bit to suit. Love this mod. Quick easy oil change. Don't even have to jack the car.

I drilled a hole in mine. 4mm? bushskinz. Wasnt as hard as i thought itd be. Makes oil changes alot quicker.

Dont think i could ever trust on of those drain valves.

I find removing the bash plate at each oil change a good opportunity to have a good look under and around the engine bay, front diff and gearbox areas however I also have the Fumoto with a length of hose attached, great for when I'm feeling a little lazy

I can’t recall of top of my head but aren’t the drains on side of the sump not vertical?
