Grease Nipples.

Could someone please let me know if there are any other grease nipples on an ML apart from the 3 on the split prop shaft?

Funny as it seems it is true, Manufacturers now make parts that wear out rather then be maintained.
That way they make money after the initial sale

On ml/mn I'm sure the tail shafts only grease nipples but I'll check on tomorrow just to be sure. The ball joints don't have nipples they are sealed units and they have a rack and pinion so no need there. Unless u have aftermarket rear shackles they might have them but the stock ones don't!

Thanks guys. :D
I asked because the dealer said there were some on the front end but I could never find any.
I do the prop shaft every 5,000km roughly. At the 15,000km service they didn't bother greasing it, as I expected.

My John Deere rideon mower has more grease nipples than the Triton and hopefully the new Kubota L4400 has a good sprinkling of them when I get around to looking.

As I've mentioned before, I owned and ran a CV joint business for some years. One of the things we experimented with was grease after seeing some joints coming through with 'non' moly grease as was standard across the industry for years. The star performer was Castrol Agri Bortex, since renamed Agri Grease Plus. This was developed as a multi purpose EP grease for farm equipment to last in extreme conditions. It comes in the grease gun friendly tube too.

Yesterday we were checking the greasing on my second hand triton I recently purchased -the u-joints were pretty dry. We found the grease nipples on the propshaft (front driveshaft) are angled way too close to the lugs coming off the u-joint, making it too tight to fit on a grease gun or a standard grease hose. Rolling the car and rotating the shaft doesn't help: the nipple's inaccessible no matter where it's pointing. The factory paint is still on the nipple and bearing, so obviously others have had the same problem and apparently the prop-shaft joints have never been greased in over 120,000kms (despite the dealer service shop ticking all the boxes on the service log -lazy b*stards).

This seems to be a design flaw. Has any one else had this issue with the propshaft nipples? Any ideas how to overcome it? cheers,

I had the same problem, so i installed a longer nipple. i had to rethread the new nipple to fit in. once i greased up the nipple i took out the longer nipple and put the standard one back in. i now keep the longer nipple in my drivers door so i don't lose it.

If the winches shafts run on bright metal or bronze bearings...
I cannot see why not as all marine winches use grease nipples as service points.

I got the shackles also that makes 8 ...8 peoples...

How often should the universal joints be greased ??

Postby cruiser53 on Tue Sep 29, 2015 6:30 pm

I had my MN Triton in for its 15000 k service and was surprised that the uni joints were not greased.
I put some grease into the rear propellor shaft uni's but my grease gun coupling was too big to fit the grease nipples of the front prop shaft.
So my question is how often should the uni joint be greased and how do I do the front?? I tried buying a thinner diameter fitting but can't find anything.
