GLXR12 Build

Postby Evo_Triton on Tue Jul 31, 2012 7:02 pm

Hey all
Finally decided to make a build thread. it wont be much at the start but its a project so it'll get there one day...
Hopefully...

So working at mits dealer i had to buy a triton which is lucky coz i dnt like any of the other 4x4 utes on the market.
Took delivery in late January 2012. Its a late 2011 build built to 2012 specs. DP ordered it specially for me. Only 2012 Mn GLX-R manual with factory rear diff lock in the country for about a month or so.

It started out standard, i then added gen triton mats, towbar, H/D bash plate, tinted bonnet protector, headlamp covers, over rail tubliner and soft tonneau cover.

Future plans,
provent catch can, egr restriction plate, more H/D bash plates, bull bar, side protection, poss rear bar, lift kit, centre roof console, ipf 900xs lights, led light bar, winch, long range fuel tank, water tank above spare tyre, fridge in tube, dual battery system. i think thats it, well until i find something else.

Next on my wish list is tyres and or rims.
Have spent many a hour or dozen looking what everyone else has got and talking to people.
I hav put it down to 3 options

Option 1.
Factory Rims
Cooper A/T3's
Poss get a set of sunraysia rims (black or white) wrapped in Cooper STT's. (later)

Option 2.
Factory Rims
Cooper ST or ST MAX

Option 3.
Sell factory rims n tyres
Buy a set of black or white sunraysia rims in ST or ST MAX.

Thoughts boys?

A lot of people, me included, are having problems balancing the steel stud centric rims so if you dont want/need play tyres, I would stay with the OEM alloys. I now have got a set of steel Prado 95 rims in 7 inch for my play tyres. Easy as to balance

Cant go wrong with either the AT3 or ST MAXX. ST's are no longer available. AT3's are more road bias. If I was getting only 1 set of tyres I would go the ST MAXX.
STT's are at the bottom end of the muddie range and could be argued they are they most agressive AT around.
I have a play set and they are a great tyre on road, for a muddie, I regret not buying something more aggressive though

thx again yeah i was leaning towards to ST MAXX. but i didnt want to get them on my alloys as the cost per tyre is massive for the size. and the fact that steel rims a so much stronger than alloys.
thx heaps mate

I like alloys for road and offroad tyres.
plenty of options available and some can be very cheap ebay is your friend as well as the offset bible in the wheel/ tyre section.

in regard to tyres that is very personal- I won't touch coopers, other swear by them.

work out the size of the tyre you want to run- that may help to make up your mind if you need 1 set of multi purpose or if you want 33" tyres then you will need 2 sets of rims tyres.

The above based on the experiences of others with the MN and 33" (Motoz)

me I would pick a 32" muddie on the standard rims- until I had worked out if that was enough- but depends on how you use your vehicle- got to drive 100kms to work daily

in regard to your post above mine- factory alloys from the Japanese manufactures are made very strong- buggers won't give a load ratings though.

some of the steel- sunrasia rims are only rated quite low
http://www.procomp.com.au/Default.asp?MenuId=WHEEL_0152
thats lower than the tyre rating required for the triton ;)

should be up around 1200kg :o

Mate i have STT's on sunraysia's as my play tyres n running the standard steel wheels from the factory for my normal driving. I dont mind the stt's to be honest, but everyone has their fav's in tyres. There are so many good tyres about and on top of that you need to choose if you are getting sunnies or keeping your alloys. i wanna get alloys for mine, but i havent really had issues with steering wobbles either (well only a few times but nothing serious enough to bother with) Loads of guys here will tell you that the alloys are more than up to the job of an off road rim, so horses for courses.
Everyone will give a different answer to this so best to pick what you like and if they dont suit you then you can always go a different brand next time. What sort of off roading do you expect to be attempting generally ?

thx trumpy955
most of the time it'll be fairly easy stuff as i dnt hav a bull bar side protection snorkle or a lift kit. but i dnt want to buy a set of tyres now and then in a year or 2 buy another set coz i hav more mods on her n the tyres wont b up for it.

Update Time.

Finally got around to getting a Provent 200 Catch can and then took me a couple weeks to get around to fitting it.

And i have also fitted a AVO 4x4 Diesel Fuel Controller and a AVO 4x4 Drive By Wire Controller.
Both units are awesome and didnt cost an arm and a leg. They only took 10mins each to install, both just plug into the factory harnesses. i have the fuel controller set on approx 2o'clock and when i need that lil extra power i put the throttle controller on Pwr3. i have driven it on Pwr9 and its amazing how the truck drives. I really want to get offroad so i can use the 3 Off Road settings n see how they go.

And i got a set of Cooper AT/3s 265/65/R17 awesome tyre love them, havent really used them offroad properly yet but so far so good.

Agree the white looks good but I was silly enough to let my wife talk me out of it!

Anyway Evo, I just noted from your pics that you are running the wrong UHF whip antenna. The longer one you are using will create a poor match to your radio. The longer whip is designed to be mounted directly on a ground plane. You need a 1/4 wave length antenna instead.

While it will work as is, you won't get best performance from your radio.
