Motoz MN GLX R: Evolution of a Warrior

Postby motoz on Tue Mar 01, 2016 6:56 pm

Got a spare day to myself to do some more on the Triton.

Had a win and a loss so I guess it was an average day... lol

First up the winch. I haven't serviced it since purchase and it's had a fair few swims. The grease was like honey with contamination and slight rust. Not ideal. It all cleaned up ok except once it was reassembled.

It will only winch out when it's in the free spool position. Have checked the gearbox etc and all is well. Got me stuffed !!!

Alas some more head scratching is required...

I had a win grafting the TJM side rails I bought from a NTN member onto the WASP sliders.

Bit of work with the steel glue gun...

There off to sandblasting tomorrow then 2pak. Powder coating is just not suitable as once it's damaged the corrosion is certain.

To be continued...

While the sliders and getting blasted and re painted I did a little more fabrication today.

I had made a temp bracket for the UHF aerial about 3yrs ago and it was starting to bust. I replaced it with some strap steel, 50mm wide and 4mm thick. Add some KTM 6mm bolts, Rhino swage plates and a lick of black paint and it almost looks factory...

Motoz MN GLX R: Evolution of a Warrior

So I pick up the side steps and rails tomorrow from the paint shop.

Today was getting a few things tidied up before heading over to do the High Country. I added another strip light to the outside channel of the awning.

I'm going to be swagging it this trip so some extra lighting always comes in handy.

I grabbed these connectors from eBay a while back. They have a positive and negative terminal. Add some cable and a cig plug and presto a 12v power lead.

Then a strip of orange light, add cable and finish with the male connection.

Easy setup and quick disconnect.

I dusted off the muddies today. After cleaning out about 20 Redback spiders and their webs I gave the rims a good clean.

I didn't realise how scratched up they are. Plasti dip to the rescue for a facelift and new look.

Thanks mate.

Got the Plastidip for $25 so works out hell of a lot cheaper than getting them either re polished, painted or powder coated. There only going to get scratched up again anyways... lol

Yeah the connectors are very handy. From memory they were $10 for a set of 10 male and female. Came in from Hong Kong.

Mate it's from Supercheap.

Duplicolor Matte Carbon Black. One can is more than enough to do four rims giving four coats each.

I didn't go that far. Gave them a really good clean with a scotch brute and pressure wash. Then a wipe over with wax and grease remover before painting.

The stuff sticks pretty well.

The wipe with wax and grease remover is an important step.. I failed to do it, and the plasti-dip lifted in a couple of places ( typically where lots of fingers touch ).. luckily it comes of quite easily for a second spray !

Yes mate both really.

Doing 5 days in the High Country over the break. Also I've now got the time to rewrite some of the wrongs and dodgy installs I've done in the past.

It's always been a mad rush getting things sorted before a trip due to being time poor and a few shortcuts taken along the way.

Now has been the time to rewrite some wrongs.

So you're buying a ML?

Well done fixing things up.....it's always hard to motivate yourself to redo things.

You should be well and truly set for your trip now.

I feel your pain on this one as well.

just dodgy this up for the trip, 5 years latter it is still the same.

I should dedicate some time to fixing the wrongs- you may have inspired me :ugeek: 8-)

Yeah that's it.
Also the way we camp and use the vehicle has changed over the years also.

We used to take everything but the kitchen sink, then over a few trips I stripped it back to the bare minimum.

Some of the additions though practical weren't the most user friendly. I guess as the thread title suggests it's an evolution.

This contradicts my mission statement at the start of this thread of "do it once and do it right"

Alas life is like that sometimes... lol
