I ended up stripping the GQ diffs out of the old girl and replaced them with GU. This gave me twin spot disk calipers on the front to help braking and 4.3 ratios. The GU diffs are also stronger and 46mm wider.
Starting to get a little more adventurous with it now and its proving very reliable. Fuel is about 16lt/100km, a little better than the 3.2lt Diesel.Click to view larger pictureClick to view larger pictureClick to view larger picture

What fuel economy was your diesel running if 16lt with the v8 is better

Or is that a overall $ cost per 100 km scenario? Being that petrol is generally less expensive than diesel

Gday mate. With the Auto, 22lb of boost, 33s, and all the gear on the Triton, I was averaging 16.9/100km.

The difference will be when I start towing with the petrol vs the diesel.

Its all fun and games.

Your new economy is not too bad considering it's a v8, hard not to use and hear the noise with a new toy
Your trailer is not usually too heavy from memory, but then you might have added some more toys to that as well?

The bike trailer is around 1500kg loaded. I,ve just changed the patrol ratios from 3.9s to 4.3s and that has made a huge difference with the 35s.
I expect the fuel economy will increase slightly. I'll just jave to fit bigger fuel tanks.

What a ride reading this thread is! I saw the pics, started looking for when you made the call on the engine and thought you'd done a solid axle swap. Got completely suckered in by the first engine failure!

I like the tray, looks good and tough.

Cheers mate. It's been a journey. As you can gather I don't like following the pack. Plenty of people wont like it, but I don't really care. There is not too many Solid axle, Coil sprung V8 Tritons around. (Yet). [WINKING FACE]

Cheers Mate. We did Lane Change anf Brake Fade test yesterday. She passed with no issues. With all the bar work she is still lighter than a bare stock GU Patrol.

So this happened today!!

The Triton was registered. 100% SA Street Legal.

Engineered on a Ford Maverick chassis, Nissan Patrol GU diffs and a Commodore 5lt V8. Other modifications include custom fabricated body mounts, bar work and a GVM upgrade to that of a Nissan Patol anongst a thousand other mods.

Faithy, Thanks for putting up with me and this project for the last 9 months. Love you Lots.

Adam and Steve at Llordan Diesel for letting me use their workshop at Lonsdale.

Grant from Dynotronics. A true magician when it comes to Auto wiring. Nothing phases this guy.

Sean who fabricated my body mounts. I gave him carboard cutouts. He had them cut, bent and then welded them to the chassis for me.

Shannon and Tony at Pro 4x4, for helping with converting the Mavs diffs to GU Patrol diffs and getting the car ready for Brake and Lane Change manouvers.

Last but not least.

A big thanks to Joel and Josh from auTest.
These guys were a pleasure to work with. They were open minded and considered all the ideas that I threw at them. Working with Joel resulted in the car being engineered and 100% Leagal with registration in SA. The ultimate goal.

Now to get out and use the thing!!!

What a fantastic result from all the hard work. Shame you can't send it to Mitsubishi and show them how to build a real unit. Congratulations and keep the almost shiny side up.
