The Story of Cage's New Triton

Postby Cage on Mon Nov 18, 2013 12:35 pm

Hi all

I'm retired and live in the Hunter Valley in NSW.

My old '86 Patrol, like me, is getting a bit long in the tooth.

I was looking at the Navara D22, and from a value and feature POV it seemed like a good buy, then I saw the great deals on the new GLX-R and am having a real hard look at it.

I guess I'm here to read what the forum members think about their Tritons and try to suss out any inherent problems.

Cheers

Cage

I have driven a D22 for work for the last 12 months and have done about 70,000 kms in it in that time about 60/40 on and off road. I had a hilux (work ute) for 18 months before the Nissan and that was over rated.
When looking for a new personal vehicle earlier this year (April, decided to replace a 2007 patrol) I decided to go with a Triton as I found the D22 rattled a lot off road, sucked in a ton of dust, front end shocks had been replaced 2 times in 12 months and they had been upgraded and it was expensive to run.
I had driven the tritons previously in Mongolia and found them pretty good off road other than that I knew nothing about them. I have since done 19,000 kms in the triton and love it, it's great off road and is reasonably good on fuel even when loaded and being driven like I stole it.

Buy one they're bloody good for the price.

Welcome Cage.

You realise that you're talking apples and oranges here. D22 is same generation technology vehicle as the MK Triton which came out in the late 90's (although they have updated the engine). There is no comparison - features, comfort, safety, driving, ability are all vastly superior in the Triton. To top it off they're pretty good value as well. A no brainer I'd say. ;)
Chris

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

Cheers guys.

Yes, the Triton makes the D22 look VERY agricultural.

Luckily my finances were a bit slow to get organised or I might have made a big mistake. When I started looking I missed seeing the deals on the GLX-R and didn't delve deeper as I thought they were all $45K+

Going for a test drive this week.

I just couldn't go past the GLX at $28,500 drive away, given I was looking at three year old hi-lux's with 80k on the clock for the same price or more, even at the auctions!

Mate, I couldn't agree with you more. Just had a test drive in a GLX and to say the least, I was impressed.

The GLX looks like the way to go for me too. Don't need/like the 'sports bar', can live without the 'super select' traction doovey, I can also live without steering wheel control of the radio and the fog lights will disappear when the bull bar goes on.

I'm excited!!! :D

About to buy a new GLX. Some input on accessories plse

Postby Cage on Wed Nov 20, 2013 8:49 am

Hi all

After nearly doing something silly, like buying a Navara D22, I think I now have my head on straight, and am in the throes of getting a GLX.

I can live without the extra bells 'n' whistles of the GLX-R and am pretty happy with what the GLX comes with. I'm an old fart and am over the 'go fast, go anywhere' thing. I'm into photography and want something that I can use off road to get to most places.

A trip to the Cape is on my agenda, in company, before I get too decrepit. I'm not new to fourbies having had Patrols for years, still got an old MK diesel.

OK, the two bits I want, ASAP, are protection items. First, a bull bar, and I've decided on the Ironman Protector. Apart from protection I rather like how the polished bits will kook on a black ute. Secondly a rear bar that will give some protection to the edges of the tub that the standard rear bar doesn't and I think the MCC Rocker 022-01 looks like the goods.

Any feedback on these items most appreciated.

Cheers

Sounds like you are already on the money champ. Welcome to the light side. You will be impressed where this car can take you, even in stock form. I came from a 3L patrol and I've never looked back. Whilst you are looking into protection, grab yourself a decent set of bash plates as the first thing you will do if you dont have them is kill your 4wd actuator. Front and rear bars are a personal preference, so if they are what you like, then go for it.

Cheers Doc.

Thanks for the heads-up on the bash plates.

The front and rear bars, apart from their obvious use, are for a bit of urban peace of mind, particularly in shopping centre car-parks etc.

4wd actuator is no longer mounted on the front diff mate, but yeah good set of plates are essential, esp. For a cape trip

Good choice on the ute mate you won't regret it over a d 22

Anyone seen this trick looking hard lid?

Postby Cage on Wed Nov 20, 2013 4:34 pm

Hi

During my browsing prior to getting a new GLX I am coming across some interesting looking bits.

Anyone seen this little 'gem' ?

Looks too good to be true eh? Probably want an arm, both legs and a kidney to fit it.

Cheers

Seen one getting around the Newcastle area.
Basically turns a ute into a sedan so I'm not interested.

If you're in SA I can show you how well the mcc gear is finished off. And they take a 12000 lb winch without groaning.
they also have side airbag compatible steps with double rails that protect the sill panel.

Thanks guys. I'm pretty happy that the Ironman bull bar will suit my needs.

I'm really like some feedback on the MCC Rocker rear bar.

Yep, looks like Diabolo's.

What appealed to me is that it appears to sit on top of the tub without pinching any interior space.

I want to set my vehicle up for extended touring, max 2 up, and will remove the rear seat for extra storage.

Not sure about that one but Diablo's makes it ridiculous to store stuff under. Completely useless piece of crap.

Looks good though

//just looked through the pics, similar setup which is painful. Only opens about halfway along the tub making things up the front very difficult to access.
I'm not so good with the advice  ... Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment???
