Really? I thought it was the rolling diameter? Where's that new VSI thread when you need it?

I assume that these guys have it right.

And as I said above, I may be completely misreading the formula.

And here is the vsi6 link. viewtopic.php?f=85&t=15229&hilit=tyre+sizes

Right went and found the details

vsi on tyres.JPG

By the way they've done their examples they seem to be calculating sizes rather than looking at the actual tyres.

If it was just random roadside checks you were worried about there is a challenger tyre placard that has a more suitable tyre size... surely that's just a Triton wagon after all?

Dave, you know as well as I do that the insurance companies can wriggle like a 44gal drum full of worms when it comes to paying out on insurance claims, and I'm real sure if if came to the crunch they would be pedantic and point out that the rules state 7% over normal, and you are at 7.27%, so buddy, take a hike!

Okay so I checked and the biggest standard is the 245/70/16 or 245/65/17. From memory the stock tyre is a Bridgestone 840. They list that as a 750mm tyre. The size you want in say a D697 - a top tyre, is listed as 804mm. Both list figures are damn close to what you calculated above and yes you end up .2% over. Which sucks.

You could always get it engineered if you were really worried about it.

Interestingly though by my count the D697 in 285/65/17 would get you inside the rules by .5% - your max allowable seems to be 802.5mm and they list that as an 802mm tyre. Shame you're stuck with the 16 inch rims I guess.

Anyway, 265/70/16's will still give me some lift, and will be strictly legal.

And appreciate your help too Dave.

Or 275/70/16s - just scan the list on the second link page and look for the biggest number on OD that's under 802.5.

Yep, that looks like the max I can go to.

Oh, and I just became a subscriber. This forum has not only given me heaps of info, but has also saved me bucks by not making ill thought out buying decisions.

OK, it looks like Bridgestone DUELER A/T D697 LT275/70R16 119S may be the way to go for me.

The Dueler 840's that are on it don't inspire me too much for rough roads and NP tracks plus as said above I'm looking for the 20mm lift.

Now to find a dealer who may give me something reasonable as a trade in, otherwise it looks like fleabay.

The biggest tyre you can legally fit on the MN GLX 16" rim

Postby Cage on Sun Dec 08, 2013 7:26 pm

I'm just fine tuning the final specs on my new MN GLX.

I would like to change the OEM Dueler H/T 840's for something a little bigger, and a bit more off-road friendly. My brief was to find something legal that would give me a bit more lift. The popular upgrade seems to be to a 265/75/R16, however most of the tyres seem to be outside the guidelines of the '7% rule' in the new vsi6 regulations.

At Cowboy Dave's suggestion I checked all the better manufacturers websites, looking at their OD specs, and 'Bingo', the Maxxis 265/75R16 - 123/120Q - 3-Ply at 796mm comes in just under the 7% rule.

I've edited this post to incorporate this info. Hope this is OK as I don't want to pass on wrong info.

Appreciate your good intentions Cage but, mate, this one's been done to death and, as you point out, the answer's already there.

Thanks Dave.

Saw my new ute today. Not a pretty sight!

Postby Cage on Thu Dec 12, 2013 6:10 pm

Hadn't actually eyeballed the new MN until today. I was getting my annual crop and the barber was just around the corner from the accessory fitter, so, I thought, let's have a sneak preview.

Wasn't a pretty sight. Bare-arsed rear end, no front flares, no grill, and this guy was attacking the front guard with a hole saw. Holy snappin' duck poo, I'm glad I decided not to attempt to fit the snorkel myself.

But hey, this was my new ride, and I was pretty chuffed to actually see it.

And I can tell you that the ARB rear step bar is one bloody solid chunk of metal.

Roll on Monday !!!!!!!

Cage, I have just spent the last 40 minutes  tidying up every new thread you've started, merging them all into this one which is now the place for you to tell the story of your purchase and ownership of your new Triton. :D

I'm sure that you have observed that we try to keep things tidy around here and discussion on a subject in one place. This is your place. ;)

You can post to your heart's content here on anything to do with your new vehicle but if you start littering threads all over the forum again the results may not be pretty. I am your Moderator, not your mother. ;) :D
