Last weekend I was feeling ambitious so I unbolted the rear muffler at the join half way down the car, cut out the muffler and welded in a piece of junk exhaust pipe I had lying around the house. Made next to no difference to sound unless you really listen hard but the engine seems to feel like it's not laboring as hard any more.
Wasn't an overly hard job and managed to get it all done with my stick welder and 2.5mm rods, (nowhere near as pretty as the mig but less effort than fixing a jammed up wire feeder). If anyone is sitting there eyeing off a stick welder to make exhausts I highly recommend borrowing one and practicing on a piece of pipe long before you unbolt your exhaust. Stick welding can be very tricky on thin metal for beginners.
