Draw build take 2

Materials.
4 sheets of 12mm softwood ply $149
HDPE draw runners. $80
4 meters of carpet. $160 (top, fronts and inside draws)
Contact adhesive. $50
Pull handles. X2 draws $32
Pull handles. X4 tops. $28
3 hinges. $5.20
Hardwood folding edge. $8.00
Brackets x2. $14
Screws glue. $20

Basic set of draws. Total. $546.20

Extras led So far
Led light. $50
Switches $15
Switch box. $15
Black paint. $50

So after making my first set the first thing I wanted to try was to reduce the weight of the main carcass. So I cut the bulk of the plywood out still leaving a very strong and light frame.

Having no solid sides this could cause an issue with the storage area near the wheel arches with items falling behind the draws when open. So I decided to build solid boxes to the shape of the triton for maximum storage. And would give me a nice solid base for a second battery or compressor.

While building the frame I thought a future cable run may come in handy.

Not necessary but gave everything a quick coat of paint.

I was happy with the performance of the HDPE draw slides, but did not like the top of the draws rubbing on the carcass when open so made some HDPE top guides which can support the draws nearly fully opened.

I decided on carpet as it was cheaper easy to install and quick, the side boxes were done and I added a few switches.

The tops I did in five removable section, for easy cleaning I thought pretty hard to climb into a 300mm x 500mm x 1500mm draw space to clean and spray runners with silicone spray.

My front protective edge does a couple of things, I installed and led light and rebated and hinged to lock the draws shut, the draws also have a rubber seal all round for dust proofing and a bit of a buffer.

Still waiting for handles to arrive and i have been working on a concealed draw, and light weight folding table for inside the main draws.

Very tidy build. Wonder if I have the skill to do something similar?
Did you fix the drawers to the tub or is it tight enough. I'd like to build removable drawers as I need the full tub on occasion.

The draws do fit very snug but would take me a couple of minutes to pull out and easy by yourself ,6 screws hold the frame together and if you look at the side boxes I had to scribe around existing tie down points so they can't move up or down back to front, but as I seldom remove my draws and will tie down the centre of carcass as well.

Thanks mate. Thats not too bad then. Ive been thinking of making some myself but have been worried about excess weight. Might have to pinch some of your ideas. Do you think the 12mm ply will be strong enough to last?

Made well the 12mm plywood is very strong and should last a long time.

Robby's GLX Dual Cab

Postby Robby on Mon Nov 02, 2015 6:58 pm

I have been planning this set of draws for a while and having used my previous set for a few months which gave me the opportunity to sort out what works best for me.
I decided the space between the wheel arches could be better used, so instead of having side wings on brackets I made full length over the wheel arches boxes, which are quick and easy to install.

First up I made myself some templates to keep, which worked for both sides but took several hours to make and get right.

The templates worked well and using 12mm softwood ply the boxes were assembled.

Using the existing tie down points, the boxes can quickly and easily be secured, the pic below shows the idea but I won't use plywood as the fixing.

The boxes themselves were made to fit the contours of the tub, and one compartment was made to fit a large battery tray.

I wanted the lids removable, locking but not hinged.

The boxes were taking shape and at this stage the weight was around 10 kilos.

Very neat Robby i like the idea of using the tie down points to secure the boxes. So when do you start going into full production of custom made draws?

Thanks for the comments guys.

Hi Joel
The tie down points seemed the obvious spot to secure the side boxes and they hold very firmly. Most people seem to design their draws first and make do with the space left. I wanted to try and make the best use of the space between the wheel arches with permanent boxes which means my draws will now fit in between these easily and quickly being secured by 4 flush bolts for quick removale.
