Robby's GLX Dual Cab

Hi everyone
It's very daunting starting a build thread on this site, with so many fine examples of tritons here already.
There is so much stuff I have learnt and so many good ideas I hope to copy in the future from this site. I thought I would start with my draw build which may seem strange as I have not even purchased a canopy yet that's next.
I am a carpenter and joiner and have had a fair spell off work due an injury but hope to return very soon. We enjoy our camping so the draw build needed to be set up for work and play. After reading the draw build thread and spending a few hours on the Internet I sketched up a concept drawing.

I wanted to use up as much space possible and there's plenty of space to play with in the triton tub, it's no good having two large boxes with everything bouncing around in the back. I also wanted a design that could be easily changed and something a bit different.
I am very happy with my end result, but during my build I kept wishing I had done things differently so let's call this!!

Mark1
I started with the draw runners, could not justify the price for 1500mm ball bearing runners so opted for HDPE skids, which I picked up from my local plastic store, I decided to machine a male and female runner which would hold the draw in place and slide well.

I contemplated using 12mm standard plywood but decided to go with 12mm marine plywood . The carcass is pretty simple and the draw skids were installed.

My daughter checked out how comfy they were.

Next I made up the draws again pretty simply, but adding a cutlery draw.

So with the draws done here is the configuration

The draws slide great next came the strength test

I started on the draw fronts and thought everyone likes black trim, so why not design something you can add your own Colour or whatever you like, so using the 12mm ply I edged leaving a 4mm rebate.

The pics below demonstrate with mdf the infill panel

I was not sure if I was allowed to use the Mitsubishi logo in my design so here it is

I decided to use 3mm acrylic for the draw inserts which is uv rated and comes in many colours, next up was fitting the carcass and wings to the tub.

I used removable brackets for the wings

Plenty of room behind the arches

And after a bit of jigsaw work the wings were fitted

I used the acrylic to fill in the sides and the draws take shape.

This is how the draw fronts looked but you can use anything 3mm thick

I am happy with the draws as they are, but looking forward to Mark 2 with different construction, secret locks and lighting ,cutlery draw and internal fit out.

Your pics need to be resized to 640x480 to show up properly on the screen ;)

Nice draws 8-)
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything important, it's too late to stop reading it.

That is a really neat draw set up! I think I feel some inspiration coming on!

Have you any idea on costings and time?

I have not finilised costing yet probably between $500 - $600 for materials I have spent a few hours which is always the case when doing something from scratch but now having done the templates should become easier and quicker.

Looks awesome Robby. Do you still have access to all of that space behind the wheel well? Maybe a hatch style lid in the wings could give a bit more storage?

I've done nearly the same thing I put a board on the tailgate which helps support the draws when the out and you can pull them out a bit further with the extra support of the tailgate

That's planned for mark 2, I was going to use the same HDPE on the tailgate and as you said just gives a bit more support and the skids on the draw would run nicely across the top not to mention making a great table when the tailgate down.
Do you have any pics of your set up.

Thanks Robby

Very nice. How much of a kicker do you need to support the drawers?

Not sure what you mean when you say kicker? As you can see in the pics the draws support themselves very well and with the tail gate down and if you set it up right the tail gate will give extra support.
In mark 2 I have and idea on a side support which will help support although these work fine.
Hope that answers your question

Sorry haven't been on for a while here's some photos more trade oriented than camping but works well.Bit of silicon spray on the plastic slides doesn't hurt either makes them slide even better.

The board on the tailgate is a good idea. I was going to use 9mm HDPE

Had the board as an offcut and it takes most of the upward pressure of the external box and the form ply I used is slippery already, hdpe would achieve the same thing and make a good chopping board as well.

Having no luck selling the draws, so I decided to carpet the top and removable side wings I also made a another set of draw fronts in black which may appeal to someone just after a set of draws.

After a long search went with the TJM canopy, it was within my budget and so far happy with my choice, also got the windows tinted on the ute.
