Sorry mate I wouldn't know what's going on without looking

But it sounds like you have a booster or vacuum problem as coughy mentioned

Just hopped in to take it in for a service, a grinding sound coming from gearbox/driveline. Won't go into 3rd at all.

It's going to be a long wait. Looking at issues with front CV grinding since new when taken out of 4wd. They originally replaced the front diff. Brake booster issues, indicator recall.

Just got the dreaded call from mitsi. Dirty oil and metal in gearbox found at the magnet. Sending off a request for warranty but with the chip installed I had to authorise retail cost for pulling out gearbox (around 900). Once that is done they will determine if manufacture defect or chip caused. Looks like it will be a fight.

Stealer just called and said 4th gear is shot and reverse is pretty bad. Just called them back to check, as it was the 3rd gear that wasn't working.

I reverse my trailer into my carport daily, would that contribute to reverse gear issues.

I better grab the vaseline...

Stealer calles back and confirmed that it was 3rd gear and that they will be asking for a new transmission. I have ordered an exceedy hd clutch and asked the service manager if they could throw it in while the gearbox was out. He baulked at that saying they arent allowed to so other work during a warranty claim. I offered to pay the labour difference and he went on to say he can't write that up to get done due to warranty work.

He did go on to say that if it did find its way installed then so be be. So am I droppind it off with a slab of beer?

So even with an upgraded gearbox the Triton isn't going to cut it. What do I get to tow a 2.5T trailer daily.

Perhaps a new dmax or ranger? They've got a pretty big engine and some pulling power.

Still going to run into problems when you try and turn a work vehicle into a perfomance vehicle.

Adapt some mechanical sympathy and keep the Triton soldiering on for a bit longer.

Drive around torque impulses and run a slightly milder state of tune when heavy towing (When they make that growling sound at around 1850 RPM).

Do not hammer 1st, 3rd, 5th and reverse gears. Use low range when revering a heavy trailer up hill or in heavy going. The potential diff wind up will do less harm than thumping the gearbox. (That one would qualify for 2WD low range mod?)

I would also suggest work and play tyres, run something closer to a 31" for work or change diff ratios to 4.3:1 as not be so cruel to the main box. I'm surprised the chain has not let go in the transfer as well.... Next failure???

So I will be keeping the Triton - and try and treat it a little kinder, no more trying to redline to hear rhe growl of the exhaust

Cut tune down to 5, turbo around 22psi. Weird trying to drive and not down changing when slowing down... no idea what torque impulses are btw.

mate at 2.5 tonnes surely you have electric brakes? brake pads are far cheaper than clutches and gearboxes mate.
This car is like a bad drug habit. It is taking all my money and time, my family are concerned, but new mods just feel sooooooo good.

do you have overrun brakes on the trailer or straight electrical, the mechanic I took my double axle to the other day was trying to break everything in mine reversing up the workshop drive without disconnecting the overrun...
