My family ML

Postby parfittron on Sun Apr 12, 2015 7:51 pm

Hi all, been doing some reading and research on here and decided to sign up and throw up some pics of our triton. It's an 08 my09 diesel ML VR.

We have had it about 12 months now and it's just tucked over 40,000k on the clock, was about 33 when we got it .

Pretty standard at this stage, just has the canopy, not even a towbar! The original HTs are pretty busted so am looking to get some new hankook dynapro MTS on it in the next week or so. Looking to get a towbar, bullbar and snorkel fitted in the next few months. Planning on doing a trip from Brisbane to port Douglas and the Daintree soon after and the cape in a couple of years after the daughter is a bit older.

Cheers, yeah the previous owner had it as a business vehicle but had only done about 6-7000 a year in it.
Looking forward to getting it looking a bit less standard!

Welcome to Newtriton. 8-)
Wow that is low kms.
Of your looking at getting a tow bar have a look at rear protection bars.
Most of them incorporate a tow bar and probably aren't much dearer than a standard new tow bar.
Otherwise you should be able to pick up a cheap second hand tow bar as many of us remove them to fit the rear protection bars.

Cheers mattz. Yeah I'd seen some rear protection / step style bars, was worried about losing a fair bit of clearance as they appeared to protrude quite far.

That tablet looks pretty sweet. I've been wanting to do something similar for ages.

Yeah I'm looking forward to getting plenty of use out of it. I figured this set up was more cost effective than all in one's which are usually rubbishunless paying big bucks. This was a Chinese android tablet off eBay for about 150 and a $9 sheet of mdf to fit it. Have run the usb down through the dash to the cig socket so it boots on as soon as the car is started.

Question for you.

Like others I have thought about this style of thing as well. My problem has always been how to access the on button.

I accept that if there is charge in the tablet that it will come on via usb when power is supplied. What happens if the tablet goes flat ? How do you turn it on ?

If /when that happens I'll just pop the cover off the dash. Pulls off easy enough.

Yeah ours has only done about 10000k in the 15 months we've had it so I reckon it'll be lucky to have done 100 clicks by 2020..

Picked myself up a powder coated black Oaq bullbar today for a steal. Fitting it will be a challenge! If anyone knows somewhere in Brisbane that would fit.. I'd be interested.

All the mods coming along nicely. Just noticed that doesn't seem to be any gap between the gaurd and the ballbar. Probably wont cause any trouble if your doing day to day driving but if going off road the chassis can flex alot. There is some discussion on the forum about it and photos of damaged gaurds.

Yeah, it's not too tight probably a little give plus some space in the pinch weld. I'll have to see how it goes.

Mate you need at least a 20 mm gap between the bull bar and the front grill and grey flares...I learnt the hard way...even though my grill slips behind and below the (arb)bull bar in the corners not enough clearance was given ...ended up with chipped and cracked paint work...my flares have a 20mm gap and they still pop out of the clips on heavy flexing..can't imagine what damage you would get having the grill sitting over the bar but I suspect you will these trucks bend and flex a lot..imagine the bulbar mooving up 20 mm or more into that nice paint work....something's gotta give

There's quite a gap between the bar and the old bumper in the middle, the wings are the only part where it's fairly tight.

I've seen them fitted plenty tighter before.
