Sams steel tray build

Postby sammy1 on Sat Aug 15, 2015 10:15 am

So I finally got around to building my steel tray a couple of weeks ago. There are a lot of similarities to the just powder coating tray a few guys are running as they look the goods! I went with the 300mm high C sections in 4mm running parallel to the chassis and used the same 6 mounting points as the tub. All bracing is 3mm angle in either 50x50 or 30x30. The outer frame work and headboard is all 2mm RHS. I had the pull out drawer and side tool boxes fabricated at MW Toolbox which were pretty good quality and price. I spray painted it myself but being winter in WA at the moment probably wasn't the best idea but I can always touch it later when it heats up. In the end its going to get banged around out bush so not bothered.
I will say the car drives so much better with the extra weight over the rear heavy duty springs so happy with that. I still have to fab up the rear roll bar for a throw on canopy which ill do laterClick to view larger picture

love it. 8-) 8-)

you need to lose that towbar mate. you can get almost a foot of extra departure clearance and just buy a drop down gooseneck for towing.
This car is like a bad drug habit. It is taking all my money and time, my family are concerned, but new mods just feel sooooooo good.

Used a gloss black rust prevention acrylic which doesn't need a under coat on new steel or lightly rusted. I hit with a wire brush on the grinder and steel prep before I painted. My brother is a spray painter but in SA so next time he is over ill get to spray it in 2pac. I am happy for now.

Yeah I ran out of time before coming back to work but is on the cards. I started the tray on a Monday and had it done by Sunday so was pretty happy. I only get 9 days off and didn't want it sitting around.

Should I modify my MN tow bar or get another made? Just concerned for insurance reasons for towing if I fab it up myself?

Ive always wondered if you can just flip the towbar and redrill the holes that aren't in the same line as the top ones? That way your technically retaining the original towbar lol
